Civilization Revolution available today on XBox 360 - anyone buying?

We discussed the demo recently, and now the full version should be available. Is anyone planning on buying it this week?

I have mixed feelings after playing the demo…more disappointment than excitement. Still, I love the Civ games, and after sitting at a PC all day I’d rather be comfortable on the sofa with the XBox.

My concerns include the simplification of the PC’s approach (i.e. no workers, less control/ability to tweak city activities), and what could be a too-cute user interface that looks cool initially, but quickly becomes irritating.

What think youse?

Question for anyone who has played this (or, I guess for the OP, who has played the demo): I have a 25" standard definition TV, and I’ve run into a few 360 games where the text is so small that it’s blurry and nearly unreadable on my TV. Since a Civ game would probably have more text than your average FPS or whatever, I’m wondering if I can expect to run into this problem.

I dunno. The demo was… okay. It seems they took a lot of the stuff I like out of the whole thing, you know? Fighting is my least favorite part.

ETA - I did enjoy the style.

Hell yes! This game is great!

I’ll definitely be getting it, but I promised myself I would do some work I’ve been meaning to get done first. grumble grumble

I don’t recall any problems reading the text for the demo on a standard TV. Oh, and you could just download the demo yourself and try it, right?

I did end up fighting more in the demo than I do in the PC version, but 1) I’m not so sure that wasn’t just for the demo and 2) I probably play too pacifist in the PC game anyway and somewhat look forward to incorporating more military strategy anyway.

I bought it a two or three weeks ago and think it’s neat. Yes it streamlines some of the PC game’s concepts but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I personally find workers annoying and would rather not have to deal with them. I didn’t have any trouble reading the text on a standard definition TV. I would like it to have more zoom options.

I’m waiting to buy this game, for one simple reason. I have the two biggest exams of my life this Friday and next Saturday and I really don’t need the crack-cocaine that is Civilization interfering with my studying.

I’ve played the PS3 demo, and as a long-time addict of the PC games, I was intrigued. Still, I’m not completely sold. The interface takes some getting used to, and I hope it’s easier to manage the cities production queues than it seems to be. The cartoon-y graphics bugged me a bit, as well.

My kids, also fans of the franchise, are anxious to get it, though.

I’m so freakin’ jazzed about this game. That’s all I have to add.

I went ahead and picked up a copy today. I expected folks over at CivFanatics to really trash it (because it is so different than the PC flavours), but many of them seem to enjoy it.

Copies purchased through certain retail establishments have bonus vouchers inside for downloadable content, FWIW. GameStop, Best Buy, and (IIRC) Circuit City are three that have the vouchers, and it is my understanding that each of the chains’ vouchers differ somewhat from the others (the DLC will be different for each chain).

I played a game this evening, the initial tutorial level similar to the demo. It took about 2.5 hours, and it seemed I was unlocking XBox Live Achievements about every 10 minutes (a total of 15).

Strictly in terms of the user interface, after the freedom to move quickly to any part of the map on the PC version, I found the scrolling to be a pain on the 360. That, and near-zero options for zooming out (unlesss I’ve overlooked something).

Of course I won. A cultural victory, though I could have won several other ways (I wiped out the French, and could have wiped out the Indians). But it was a good intro to the game, and no doubt the more difficult levels will be appropriately challenging.

I was pleasantly surprised by the gimmick at the end where you scroll through the museum looking at your accomplishments in the game…pretty cool!

I just picked up my copy for the PS3 today at Gamestop. I never played the game before, but I downloaded the demo from PS Underground and it was a lot of fun. Looking forward to getting a few turns in tonight…

I thought the Black barbarian was a bit stereotypical, but I guess he was supposed to be foolish looking.

Actually, no. I have an Arcade 360 - the cheap one with no hard drive, so no demos for me. Thanks for the answer.

I plan to get it eventually. I’ve got a bit of a backlog to get to before I buy it but it’s definitely on the ‘to do’ list.

I’ve got it. It’s in the car right now.

Doh, forgot about that. Technically, that’s what I have, too, but I added a used hard drive.

A game was had last night amongst Dopers.
What’s the deal with random folks popping into the game?

I’ve been playing it on and off for a month or so. Its rather good, although i do have to switch off the higher “Civilization Functions” parts of my brain, which wasn’t easy at first given that they’ve been honed over years of playing the previous versions.

Basically once you accept it on its own terms, its a great little game and proof that you can have decent sim titles on a console as long as they are designed that way from the ground up.

One thing i do like is that they obviously put some thought into the achievements - they’re all doable within normal gameplay (i’ve just got the Diety ones and a couple of different civ-wins to get) and they’re all nicely named as well. Just one of the little things that makes the experience nicer.

The multiplayer interface is pretty shite though (admittedly i’ve only tried it once).

For the record, there’s a Germanic one and a Scandinavian one as well (you just may not have run into them yet). Depends on the terrain.

I’ve played it for a week. Revolutions is to Civ IV what NFL Street is to Madden, dumbed down yes, but different enough to not feel cheated. I am however disappointed that there is no hot seat mode. My roommate and I love Civ IV and we play it on the computer all the time, the very purpose of a turned based strategy game is hot seat play. I should have researched it further, but I guess I hadn’t even contemplated anything resembling Civilizations NOT being a multiplayer game. I checked online and read that management decided the game wouldn’t work with hot seat play, whatever, they could have at least appeased those diehard fans of Civ that are their target market and like multiplayer.

Before you even go there, I only have one 360 and don’t care to school people I’ve never met over broadband.

After a pretty solid weekend of play I still like the game. Although I have to say that the voices bug me and I play with them turned off. The game seems pretty well balanced although in single player the AI is retarted at least on King.

We do need to get more Doper games going if you see me on send over an invite.
