Speaking of Civilization....

… would that be a good XBox 360 game for me (who doesn’t like shooting and racing), and is there a Game One version or do I have to buy the more recent version which has a beginner’s game on it?

It sounds intriguing and I’d really like to try it. Saw a bunch of used ones on Amazon.

Thanks

Not a 100% sure what you are asking but Civilization is one of the best series ever.

I say that as an avid gamer and one who started playing Civ in 1993 or so and have always enjoyed it.

Dunno how it will work for XBox and of course there is a strong subjectivity to what anyone likes for a game. That said, if I had to recommend a game/series to another gamer and knew nothing of their preferences Civ would easily be near the top of my recommendations.

Take that FWIW.

Just asking is this is a game which will let me use my (what’s left of it) brain, without having a voice screaming at me to shoot, shoot, shoot!

Thanks!

Q

Oh yeah…hell yeah.

There is a lot of depth in these games.

Bottom line is they are a lot of fun. Many a night I just had to go “one more turn” and then realized the sun was rising.

Might happen tonight actually. Civ-5 is growing on me.

Dude, work on the complete thoughts in your posts.

Are you asking about Civilization: Revolution? I’ve never played it personally, but it’s supposedly a slightly simplified and dumbed down version of the PC classic. Games don’t last 8-10 hours like a typical Civ games and the lack of a mouse/keyboard simplifies the control scheme. Still, it’s a strategy game and not an action game. Which I suppose it what you are looking for.

I don’t have any idea what you are asking about the “Game One” version. The Civilization franchise has only ever had one game on the Xbox 360, and Revolution is it. You don’t need to have played any of the PC versions that came before to enjoy it.

Civ Rev is a very simplified version of the pc version. If you’ve an iphone I’d recommend getting it on that instead, it’s very cheap, has exactly the same game mechanics as the console versions and you can play it on the move.

Don’t have a console but I’d imagine there are better thinking games on it than civ rev.

You can play a game of Civilization in 8 to 10 hours? I play for about two days before I give it away in disgust before my arse is handed to me on a platter.

As to the original question, Civilization is a very challenging game. It is not an arcade game- there is no shoot shoot or dexterity required.

However, it is a deep strategical and tactical game and may be a bit challenging with what I know of your condition Qasi.

If cerebral strategy games is something you might find appealing you might want to take a look at the PC. This is really a genre that isn’t well represented on the consoles. Many don’t even require a “gaming rig”. Most of the civs, Galactiv Civ II, Sword of the stars, and a myriad others will run on a low end laptop of dekstop with no issues.

Of course once you start looking at games like Dawn of War and Total War (and you will) system requirements start to go up.

Some other strategy games that spring to mind for keeping the brain ticking over are the Europa Universalis series by Paradox games, and city builders like those made by Impressions (I like Caesar 4, not everyone does).

I have Civ Revolution on the iPhone. It’s a fun game. But it’s still pretty hard.

Quasi, keep in mind that when people describe Civ Revolution as “dumbed down”, they’re comparing it to the very, very complex original game. It’s still hard, it’s just not as epic.

Yes- I was thinking of my earlier response. I have had limited exposure to Revolution and it can always (I assume ) be set to different levels of difficulty.

If you can grab a copy and enjoy it, go for it. Be prepared to lose a lot of friends thugh with all the time spent playing it!

Got it! (Revolution - Gamestop: 19.99 and I got 2 bucks off because I had their card!) and am studying on how to play it.

But you know what?

I wish the camera didn’t show just an aerial view.

Guess WoW spoiled me, huh?

Thanks

Quasi

Yeah, I know. I’ll try to do better!

Thanks

Quasi

Guess what character I chose?

Bismarck!

Thanks

Q

I once tried The Sims (very early version) but the cities seemed so hard to build, Illuminatiprimus. I hope this one is a bit easier.

What I meant by “Game One” upthread was even though there’s a tutorial on this one, isn’t there a very early version of the game which is simple? (Like me? :))

Thanks
Q

There’s a freeware clone of an early version for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

The Sims and Caesar are completely different games - I recommend just reading a couple of reviews of it and seeing if it sounds like your thing.

You can get Europa Universalis 1 and that will set you up nicely for its various sequels, but it’s nearly 10 years old now.

Well, I’ve spent 2 days with this game and have yet to figure it out. Is there a “Civilization Revolution for Dummies” book?

Thanks
