I must know, am I alone in my love for this series of books? This may be my absolute favorite series of books, except for the Dark Tower books or maybe the Chronicles of Narnia, anyway you get the picture. I must have read this series yearly since I was 14 until about 5 years ago when I got sick of waiting for the 5th book.
When I found out the 5th book would be out in the spring I dug out my old battered paperback copies and started in again and I LOVE these books, cheesy sex scenes and all I just LOVE them.
So to make this belong IMHO which series of books do have to read every so often and which ones are your favorites?
I liked the first Clan of the Cave Bear book a lot. It’s been a while since I read it, but I’d definitely read it again if I had the chance. The other books in the series, though, seemed to rapidly go downhill. By the third or fourth, it seemed more like a prehistoric soap opera than anything else.
Let’s see, the other books I regularly revisit?
Chronicles of Narnia
the Elfquest comic book series. I tend to get teary eyed reading these!
I liked the Clan of the Cave Bear series too.
Recently I’ve re-read Ender’s Game and the follow-up books. I’ve also re-read the Bordertown series several times, Finder by Emma Bull and Bone Dance being my favorites. I like to re-read things and recently work’s been such a mess I don’t have the attention span to read anything new.
I liked the series too, and am waiting for the fifth book. I’ve also read the entire Dune series. Three Reality Dysfunction series (the best Sci-Fi series I’ve read so far). The Dark Towers series (King where’s my damn book) and the Hitchhikers series (you’ll be missed Adams). Like Athena said, I’m sure there are more, but those stand out.
My favourites are:
The ‘Demon Princes’ series by Jack Vance
The ‘Moomin Family’ series by Tove Janssen
The ‘Narnia’ series by C.S. Lewis
The ‘Amber’ series by Roger Zelazney
The ‘His Dark Materials’ series by Philip Pullman
The ‘Uplift’ series by David Brin
The ‘Flinx’ series by Alan Dean Foster
The ‘Dune’ series by Frank Herbert
Mind you, these are not necessarily my favourite authors overall, just the ones who wrote a series that I’ll keep re-reading until I go blind. There are probably more but these came to mind first.
I hated the Clan of the Cave Bear and won’t read any more of those books.
Nope, she’s alive and 12 years after her last novel, it will be published.
Meanwhile, what series of books do I love?
Outlander and the following books-though Drums of Autumn dragged badly to me. Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati-and the follow up, but I can’t remember the name.
The Ender series Parable of the Sower/Parable of the Talents by and the Exogenesis(??) books by Octavia Butler
The Song of the Lioness, Wild Magic, Circle of Magic, and Protector of the Small quartets by Tamora Pierce. Yeah, they’re for kids. You wanna make something of it?
Since my last post 48 minutes ago, I have been to the used bookstore and back. I now have copies of all of the ‘Ayla’ books. Yayyy! And only $16 for looking-new books!
Yes! I thought I was the only person on earth who read those comics. I love them!
I also love the Dark Tower series(anyone know when the next one’s supposed to be out?) and have just finished the Sword of Truth trilogy by Terry Goodkind; which, in my opinion, was pretty durn good.
I’m sorry, but when I read the thread title, I saw it as “Clan of the Care Bear” and got this mental image of naked cavemen running around having kinky sex and inventing medicine, all with those logos on their chests. Every so often there would be a rainbow.
(I read the first one earlier this year. Being me, I ignored everything but the actual story so I don’t know if my copy could tell me there are more or not. I can be pretty clueless…)
I liked Clan… and didn’t hate the rest in the series, although I don’t think they were as good as the first. I’m planning to read the new one when it comes out and, because I’ve never reread the series, I will have to do so first.
As for series I do reread:
Narnia, natch.
Several other children’s series, including:
The Betsy-Tacy books
The Little House books
Beverly Cleary’s books, especially the Henry Huggins books
The Great Brain books
Other series I reread:
Pern Although the quality of these has fallen off alarmingly in the last several books
I used to reread Robert Lynn Asprin’s Myth series, but his decade-long case of writers block had pissed me off so badly that I’m thinking of boycotting the next one (if he ever writes it). Anyway, the quality of the last few of these books sucked also, so boycotting future ones would probably be no hardship.
I love the series. The first two are my favorites. I just sort of skim The Mammoth Hunters and Plains of Passage. Way too much description of land and flora for me, plus all the “reminders” of earlier books get on my nerves. I am eagerly awaiting book 5, Shelters of Stone.
SPOILER
Ayla has been pregnant for twelve years!!! Enough with the suspense, already. Hopefully Jean has been working on Book 6 concurrently and will be out within a year of the 5th.
Oh, I forgot to add my favorite series, which would be The Dark Tower by King. (Who didn’t know that?) I’ve read a couple of “The People of…” but I didn’t like them much.
I read a mini interview of her about 3 months ago, and she claims to be doing just that(besides reassuring people she isn’t dead, that’s what it was all about, the new books.) Over the past 12 years she’s been writing the next two books, not just one, to be published within the same year.
My all time favorite series:
The Belgariad and The Malloreon series by David Eddings
The Adrian Mole series by Sue Townsend
The Hitchhikers “Trilogy” by Douglas Adams
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
The Kent Family Chronicles by John Jakes
The Mayfair Witch and Vampire series by Anne Rice
I also really like the series by Sharon Kay Penman, but I don’t know that the series has an offical title it starts with " Here Be Dragons" anyway. Barnes and noble calls it The Middle Ages series, but…
When I was younger I loved:
The Cat Who…series. by Lilian Braun
Wrinkle in Time series by M’Engle
The Homecoming series by Cythia Voigt
Time Life’s Mysteries of The Unknown
The Pyrdain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander
Every VC Andrews series before 93’
