Clark Kent and Lana Lang

I caught an episode of Smallville last night and it occured to me that I don’t really know what happened to their relationship.

I’ve always known she was there, that they were together years ago, and presumably knew Clark for Supes, and that for some reason it didn’t work.

I’m not even sure if that much is correct as far as the comics go.

Can somebody fill me in with the juicy details?

Assuming there are any.

Are you looking for the Smallville, the one from the third Superman movie, or canon from the comics?

Can’t help you with the last two, but check out TWoP for the show. Somewhere in season six, I believe, is when Lana finally learned The Truth About Clark.

In the comics, Lana was created as part of the Superboy world, as a Lois Lane substitute. She remained in Smallville when Clark moved to Metropolis, and was ignored for many years in the Superman continuity. Eventually, she did show up.

But the original Clark and Lana from the comics were not an item – never more than friends.

Of course, I’m sure this has been revised over the years.

Actually, Lana and Clark started to get romantic in the early eighties, at a time when Lana Lang was becoming a more prominent character and there was a brief story arc about the cooling of the romance between Superman and Lois.

Was that before or after she was a spy for her evil alien overlords?

I think it *was * around the time she became The Insect Queen…

Currently I believe she is separated from Pete Ross who was the Vice President under Lex Luthor, Ross might be president now but I’m not sure. Oh, and she has a kid named Clark.

Before. The Manhunters storyline was early in Post-Crisis, while the romance I described was just prior.

Lana did have a crush on Superboy, though (and then later Superman…there are a bunch of comics from the 60s that had Lois and visiting Lana fighting over Superman). Clark wasn’t really an item with anyone. If only he were more like that dreamy Superman! <sigh>

AH. I really was looking for how she cropped up in the comics and what their relationship was like. I think that has basically been answered.

Of course, I’m sure pre-Crisis she was really the Queen of Earth in hiding or something, but hey.

Nicknamed “Clubber”?

Nah. Ross was president for a while after Luthor went crazy, but only until the next election. Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard in the guise of Henry Knight was president until his destruction. Currently, it’s a fellow named Horne.

I believe that Pete resigned before the election, due to him being associated with some illegalities under Luthor, even though he wasn’t really guilty. He was trying to do the right thing and the real powers behind the government wanted him to do things their way. He wouldn’t so he had to go.

Lana in the comics is now the chair of Lexcorp, basically overseeing the dismantling of most of it, and attempting to get the rest on a sound and legal footing.

Of course, Insect Queen is supposed to be showing up soon, so she may be getting a power boost.
