Class rings

I got mine during my senior year.

It’s a feminine customized ring with a black onyx stone. I still wear it in the left middle finger. Sometimes it’s the only jewelry I wear. Not because of school pride, but because I personalized it and I like the black stone it has.

Like Cal, I have my Brass Rat from MIT. I wear it every day, and have since I got it in my junior year. It’s like a lodge symbol - it’s how MIT-ers recognize one another out in the world.

I had one. Got it around Junior Year, IIRC. I gave it to a girlfriend post-HS…and never got it back. -shrug- I suppose it if mattered to me that much, I’d have tried to get it back harder.

Looking back, that money would have been more wisely spent on more camera equipment.

You want to know something really embarrassing?

In the mid 1990s, I checked with Josten’s. They said they didn’t sell previous years’ rings. I could have ordered a 1994 or 1995 ring that year, but not an '82 ring.

So I had the thought…

I got one Senior year of High School as a memento, but never wore it (too big and garish, though I did like some of the design elements). I personally think guy rings look kinda dumb, except for wedding bands, so I was resolved never to wear a ring until I got married.

I’m sure it’s still around somewhere.

I recently started wearing mine again after many years of it sitting in a box in a drawer. I had a generally okay time in highschool, and it’s not an unattractive ring. Mostly I’ve been wearing it because my grandparents bought it for me and it makes me smile to be reminded of all the kindnesses they did for me.

I’ve only met one person who wore a HS class ring after high school. It was typical of his dorkiness.

I had a class ring. My steady girlfriend wore it with a big wad of dental floss to make it fit her finger. When we broke up, she stole it. It was a complete waste of money.

Balfour’s will give you any year you want for a $25 surcharge. I just checked the website.

Yeah, like I’d really want to be reminded of high school. It was bad enough that my mom made me buy the yearbook every year.

I didn’t get one in college because I didn’t like college either, and come to think of it I don’t think they even had rings. Or at least, it was so unimportant to most people in my college that it didn’t even register on my radar. I never saw any signs for it, anyway.

Um… it was a $35 surcharge.

And call me a total idiot, but guess what I just ordered? $483, and worth every penny.

I have a high school ring!

Now I hope I don’t get a zit before the Prom.

My parents gave me the option of getting a class ring or a regular ring my senior year. I opted for a signet-style ring of gold and onyx. I have worn it every day since then. The class ring I would have tossed within a year of graduation.

You’re my hand-twin!!!

I never bought a class ring. I was jealous of my friends’ rings for about a week, but then I got over it. I wore my boyfriend’s ring, anyway.

And Bricker, awww! I wanna see it!

I’ve never seen one in real life.

They were offered, though. Around graduation, maybe a week before, an independent firm would setup a stall in the gym to hawk them. They had a brochure available with pictures of the most hideous, monstrous, abominations to jewelry imaginable, with all the options available outlined (gold, silver, Reynold’s Wrap or whatever their cheap metal was) and a selection of colors you could have your hunk of plastic–sorry, “gem”–dyed.

There was nothing on them to suggest the school at all, they were quite generic. Noöne I knew got one; I can’t imagine they sold more than a handful. Maybe if they were cheaper (on the whole, this is a very poor community), but spending $250-500 for an ugly piece of plastic stuck in white metal (you can pretend it’s sterling if you want, but we all know better) was insane.

I’ve never heard of getting them when entering high school. It was always something you had the option of getting when leaving. So, no, it wasn’t a token of relationship status.

I should get a commision.

Seconded: give us a link!

Congratulations!

You? I did all the research!
