Class rings

I bought one. Where I lived, Jostens came at the beginning of 12th grade and you received your ring a few months later. It was expensive, the stone was fake (there was no option to get a real stone) and I never wore it a single day after graduation.

I guess I bought one because everyone else was, but really, there’s very little about high school I’d like to remember. As well, wearing a high school ring with graduation year on it is a sure way to get carded at the bars.

It’s been sitting in a drawer for 14 years. And pawn dealers don’t want class rings.

I can’t see why anyone would get a high school ring if they’re planning on attending college…

I got mine after I’d been out of college for 15 years. My wife saw me eyeing them in a display case, whilst on campus for a football game, and gave it to me as a present. I’ve worn it almost every day since.

(I keep waiting for someone to ask me what the inscription says, so I can say “ash nazg durbataluk, ash nazg krimbakul…”)

Speaking as an ex-pawn shop worker, I agree, unless the ring is gold and you can prove it’s yours.

The best you’ll get is scrap value. Even if someone sold us their ring, we would hold it for about a year just in case you changed your mind.

Then we would smash out the stone and sell it to our scrap dealer.

I got one. Circa 1980, white gold, with jade for the gem. I also got the not traditional oval shape. Other than that it looks pretty traditional. When I realized that I’d never wear the thing again I was going to throw it out, but my teenaged daughter asked me for it. I don’t know if she still has it.
