We’re all sitting around drinking beer and discussing this question, and here are our picks for Classic cult flicks…
-A Boy and His Dog
-FutureKill (I could make a better movie with a video camera and six friends, but that’s not the point)
A Clockwork Orange **** (When we think of watching this film for the umpteenth time, we have the uncontrollable urge to do a little of the old in-out, in-out. Then maybe off for a little ultra-violence with Ludwig Van.)
-Surf Nazis Must Die
-Fridays
-Heavy Metal (Buff cartoon chicks in tight leather. Need we say more?)
-The Class of Nuke’em High (a little irradiated sex, anyone?)
-Soylent Green (“It’s PEOPLE!”)
-Barbarella
To answer the OP…I agree with some earlier posters that “getting” cult flicks is not all that important. I feel though that the reason a cult flick becomes a cult flick is because it presents a point of view or an original vision of the future that appeals to a certain segment of the population. For whatever reason.
With all the Kubrick mentions, surprised no one mentioned Dr. Strangelove. Funny movie…with great roles by Peter Sellers.
Speaking of Mel Gibson, has anyone seen The Year of Living Dangerously? Loved that one…for some reason I think of it as one of the most romantic movies I’ve ever seen.
Totally forgot about A Clockwork Orange being a cult classic because it’s one of my favourite movies. I don’t think I would consider Trainspotting a cult classic. I think it garnished too much attention and got too big of a following. Though, it is one of my favourite movies (and the book is also one of my favourites).
Now, there is one movie that has been brought up here, a lot. And that is Highlander. Well guess what trailer I saw at the theater the other night: Highlander: Endgame
Hmmm, I know I’ll see it, just because even if they do suck I check out the Highlander movies (being the good Scottish boy that I am). I have my fingers crossed that this one will be different.

I don’t think it’s that bad, but I don’t get the big attraction, either. I saw a documentary on San Simeon on “America’s Castles” that was more interesting. Otherwise, it’s just the same “money can’t buy happiness” message we’ve heard a bajillion times.
Okay, so Welles did stuff with the camera that had never been done before. Good for him! But … is that all?
My parents got that for Christmas one year, they sit and laugh their asses off while watching it. Very strange movie! It’s like those really bad “educational videos” you’d get shown in school, only it’s feature-length. Yikes!
I’ve also seen ** Happiness ** and was glad later that I’d seen it alone so I didn’t have to explain/justify the movie. It was pretty disturbing, but I did enjoy it.
And I remember Videodrome too! My husband insisted that I watch it, and it was every bit as weird as he described. Fuct up!
As for the ones I don’t “get”, I would cite ** Lost Highway ** and ** Crash **. Explanations, please?
Gotta make sure the kids aren’t around when you rent most of that stuff. Pretty disgusting some of it.
I’m gonna finish watching “Boys Don’t Cry” tonight. I started the first 15 minutes and had to stop watching last night. Looks pretty good though, Hillary Swank is very convincing.
Oh yeah, couldn’t hardly believe it. Last night Fox ran “Event Horizon”. I watched a few minutes, they didn’t cut it very hard. Thought that one was fairly gory to be showing at 8:30 EST on a Thursday.
Where can you find Re-animators? It has Kathleen Kinmont in it and she is one of my favorite actresses. I would love to see that film, but have not seen it for rental anywhere
Talk about crap! Ed Wood made some really lousy movies, but this one is the top! talk about a movie that has:
-no discernable plot
-grace “C” actors
-laughable “special effects” (pie pan flying saucers suspended from fishing poles
-the key member of the cast (Bela Lugosi) dies as filming begins
Watching this turd is sheer torture-my hat is off to anyone who can sit through it!
Blue Velvet
Buckaroo Bonzai
Brazil (at least not until the end)
Looking again at this list, maybe it’s not just the films themselves, maybe it’s just that I find all movies that start with the letter ‘B’ inscrutable.
shrug
I like most of the others mentioned, although many to a lesser degree. Some, I haven’t seen, so will refrain from comment.
Re-Animator is out of print; however, I’ve seen it in rental stores. I recently replaced my dubbed copy with a factory copy on eBay. Of course, it was used, but tape quality is just fine.
Be careful, however. This movie comes in a R-rated version. You don’t want this one. You want the original, unrated version. If you are shopping eBay, be sure this is clear before you bid. If you see it at the rental store, you can check the box easily enough to determine which version it is.
