Classic Rock Internet Radio Stations like XM's "Deep Tracks"

Starting this discussion as an offshoot of this thread, to hopefully provide relief from the banality of classic rock radio.

I agree with Leaffan…I’m not keen on paying for (Sirius/XM) radio in the car, but I do have the TuneIn radio app on my phone and can listen via bluetooth and/or my AUX jack. I’ve been on the hunt for internet stations, or local stations around the world that broadcast over the web, that make an effort to play more obscure classic rock tracks, similar to XM’s Deep Tracks.

I’m anticipating that some college and public radio stations will be mentioned here…for those unaware, these tend play a much wider variety of genres, usually according to the whims of the DJ. These should be indicated as such…as should any station that shouldn’t be classified as “classic rock” or “adult alternative” first and foremost. A recent playlist (sometimes easily found on the station website) would be helpful.

So, just a few to kick things off…

Classic Deep Cuts - a “Radionomy” station
Hard Working Americans - Play a Train Song

The Clash - Hitsville U.k. - Sandinista!

not true classic rock, but close…

WNCW Public Radio from Charlotte, NC

Currently playing Wilco’s “Impossible Germany”

The best thing on “Deep Tracks” is Jim Ladd.

  • Sirius XM Radio announced on December 2, 2011 that Jim Ladd would host a live, daily free-form music show on Deep Tracks, channel 27 beginning in January 2012. Jim can now be heard weeknights from 7pm-11pm Eastern and 4pm-8pm Pacific.*

Too bad you can’t just pay for his show.

WVLI Kankakee, IL

KCDX, out of Florence, AZ.

They play classic rock, basically, but DEEP cuts. They play deep album tracks, stuff I’ve never even heard OF. Obscure bands, obscure albums by known bands. And they never have commercials, never. And the only talking is station ID.

I don’t know how they do it.

However, they must not have any full time employees. I noticed one time that they kept repeating the same playlist every day, in the same order. For like a week. I sent emails through their website, but nothing happened.

This site: http://stlouisclassicrock.com/ offers seven stations, six of which are of the classic rock deep trax flavor. All free and commercial-free.

The site lists the last ten songs played, so you get a taste of what is on each station stream.

Hold Your Head Up is by Argent

I know that!

To elaborate…I merely copied the recent songs played as they displayed on the corresponding websites. If there was a mistaken song/band name, it occurred on the site itself.

Also, I’m reading that the Zombies (with Rod Argent) have been performing it for a while now…perhaps they found and played a live version? That particular station, “Deep Nuggets” (one that I’ve been listening to more and more), plays whatever strikes their fancy, and certainly doesn’t censor their DJs - this morning I heard Marianne Faithfull’s “Why’d Ya Do It” - I’ll leave it to the reader to look up those caustic lyrics.

3WK has a Classic Rock station that plays more obscure stuff. Here’s their recent playlist:

sacred mushroom/i’m not like everybody else

music machine/talk talk

nick drake/place to be

donovan/cosmic wheels

captain beefheart and his magic band/zig zag wanderer

canned heat/catfish blues

john mayall/counting the days

deep purple/fireball

jefferson airplane/eskimo blue day

b.b. king/lucille

They don’t own it.

"The Zombies" were led by Rod Argent, who unsurprisingly, also founded, "Argent".

When I lived in Ann Arbor I always listened to WCBN. They played pretty much anything, anytime. Classic rock, country, electronic, polka, whatever. And somehow they played it all uncensored. No beeps on swearing, or anything. You could listen to The Archies, Air, Frank Zappa and Conway Twitty all in the same hour.

Classic Rock Deep Cuts on Google Play Music.

First 10 tracks
Long Hot Summer Night - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Alison Gross - Steeleye Span
That’s The Way - Led Zeppelin
It’s Never Too Late - Steppenwolf
Love Of The Common Man - Todd Rundgren
Waiting For The Sun - The Doors
Soul Love - David Bowie
Empty Pages - Traffic
Burn Down The Mission - Elton John
Squonk - Genesis

Deep Cuts from KLPX 2 in Tucson, AZ. It’s a 24 hour channel you can pick up on HD radio. You can also stream it here. There are apps for iPhone and Android as well.

What kind of music will I hear on KLPX2: Deep Cuts?

You’ll hear Classic Rock tunes from artists that aren’t played much anymore like The Count Five, Iron Butterfly, Uriah Heep, Lou Reed, Robin Trower, and King Crimson among others. We’ll also play those deeper cuts from Pink Floyd, Rush, Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull and even Led Zeppelin. The station will focus on songs from the late 1960’s through the 1970’s.

Sometimes WVLI still surprises me and plays something I never knew existed. The Beach Boys singing about drive-in theaters, for example.
