The reaction to “when the levee breaks” is hilarious, and it has prompted me to that sucker on my playlists, long time since I heard it. What a masterpiece.
I’ve made the point before that great music needs no context and has no temporal limits. It is a gut reaction. I put “Back in Black” on for my kids with absolutely no introduction and they were bopping away in the back of the car like mad things. In a way that they do not do for everything.
Wicked harmonica in that one. I guess Robert Plant is playing it? If so, he shoulda done that more.

Being so fond of this music myself, and so little enamored of most of what gets put out these days, I really like the idea of younger people discovering this and going “wow!” … but there’s a lot of this (I’ve seen a dozen or so youtube channels of someone young who generallly listens to hip hop going all ecstatic over Pink Floyd) and part of me, the suspicious cynical part, wonders if this is for real or if they’re somehow having us on? It’s not like these songs are so rarely played that a person would grow up completely unexposed to them (is it?).
My own experiences with people who only listen to top 40 pop is that they’re no more impressed with classic rock than the kids in my sixth grade class were with symphonic classical when I tried to turn them on to it.
Any chance they’re testing our credulity and laughing at us for biting?
The dude listening to the beginning of When the Levee Breaks certainly appeared to have his sensibilities utterly derailed when Bonzo was driving the beat and Plant shrieking into the harmonica and Page’s searing riffs into those headphones.

Maybe they’ve gone out of vogue now but the slew of different Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Let’s Dance and other music related video games meant that your average middle-upper class white kid probably knew at least a song or two by each of the major classic rock artists. Maybe not for black households (or maybe yes, I honestly don’t know)
Right. Why should I believe those are genuine reactions? The people who just shrug their shoulders as they listen aren’t going to be in videos.
The guy listening to Bohemian Rhapsody and the guy listening to When The Levee Breaks we’re both cracking me up.
I was kind of surprised to see Genesis’ “Watcher of the Skies” in there with a lot of more well known songs. And listening to the guy’s comments about the organ and how it was kind of grating made me think “He’s listening to the wrong song. He should be listening to The Musical Box.”

Not the same guy, but some dude listening to The Musical Box for the first time. I really enjoyed watching his reaction, because after listening to that song for over thirty years, it still gives me chills every time.
I find a lot of those fun to watch, although, yes, for some of them I do wonder if they’re just playing to the cameras. Even if it’s sometimes a bit of a put-on, it can have its pleasures. (The young lady talking about her nipples being aroused by Leonard Cohen’s voice … ahem.)
I do prefer it when the speaker has more to say. Fil from Wings of Pegasus might be a little bit older than some of these other vloggers, but he’s an experienced musician and music teacher and his appreciation comes with a degree of knowledge that can be informative. He calls his videos “analysis” rather than just “reaction.”

A little bit of context for those links wouldn’t have been unappreciated. Like, for example, what they are actually reacting to. Artist name. Song name. Something a little more than “classic rock”.
I’ve watched many of these kind of videos in the past. They were enjoyable at first, but then I noticed a sameness, a pattern to their reactions. Someone discovered this is very easy to make, and that ppl like to watch other ppl getting excited and agreeing that their favorite song is great. They used this to get money, through views, or even donations. Some of the ones I saw had some sort of scrolling chat on-screen with them - they must have streamed it live, and the ppl watching were donating money to the person.
I never once saw anyone have anything but an amazed/awestruck reaction. You’d think someone would say, "It’s all right. . . “, or, 'That sucks.”, or, “WTF is this, opera?”, but no. Every video had people gushing over songs they allegedly never heard before, even very popular songs that are embedded in western culture, like Bohemian Rhapsody.
I think many, if not most or all of them, are made in a calculated manner to attract donations or views, which also translates to money. It’s a shame, because it might be fun to watch people’s real reactions.
100%, all the way to the bank. The acting is better in some than in others.

Yeah. I suspect the reactions are mostly honest, but they’re easy to do and surely looking for views. A handful have people making pretty good observations about the music, speaking intelligently about the songs. The Lost in Vegas guys aren’t bad. And the Fine Bros React channel gets multiple reactions from specific groups and edits them well. Most of the others are pretty lazy though.
Oh wow, these are great, thanks. I spent a couple of hours last night just going through Fil’s youtube videos. I love the way he points out just why these guys are monster players.
