Wait, holy shit, are you telling me people on the internet made a petition with a stupid premise?!!!
You poor sad little boy. It must so hard to be discriminated against on a daily basis by the nasty-wasty vagina-winas.
Oh for fuck’s sake. Are we really going to do this?
So that’s what happened to this guy!
FWIW, The Southren Poverty Law Center considers some of the MRA groups to be hate groups. It has begun tracking various MRA sites and activities due to their misogyny. Here’s a list of some of the MRA sites that they find concerning:
Here’s a brief article they did looking at some of the misogyinstic myths being spread by these groups:
Subscribing and popping up a bucket of fresh corn. Should be fun!
Oh gosh, I don’t mean to trivialize the dangers of misogyny, but some of the quotes from those MRA sites are hilarious. My fave:
Beware, sistas: if you put “masculine attitude” into your hair, the pickup artist you banged that one night may never call you! Wouldn’t that be terrible.
Men’s Rights, that’s funny. Now there’s a group of people who could use some rights for a change. I hope they (we) get them, and I can’t wait to see what they (we) do with them!
I think we need some sort of non-porn generalization of Rule 34 (that is, a general rule to which Rule 34 is the specific case for porn).
It’s the fucking Internet. You could probably get 2,243 people* to sign a “Petition Demanding That Everyone Who Signs This Petition Be Taken Out And Shot”.
*Actually, it’s now up to a whole 3,291 people.
By all means, mock people who do stupid and mockable things. That petition certainly qualifies. But this:
is a ridiculously stupid overgeneralization.
Well isn’t that ironic.
Having read Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an Era, by Michael Kimmel, which includes two chapters on the men’s movement, I think you’re mostly right. It ain’t all Iron John and drum circles and such harmless stuff; it does have that side, but it also has a side driven by a sense of “aggrieved entitlement.”
Most MRAs are whiny hateful douchebags, but they hardly rise to the level of a terrorist group. Also, they don’t really deserve to be grouped with that mutant in Santa Barbara. In any event, I think This cat might help them.
And yeah, petitions don’t really prove anything. I was going to link to the petition to ”Establish new legal system of motorcycle riding ‘Judges’ who serve as police, judge, jury, and executioner all in one,” which got well over 2,000 signatures, but Whithouse.gov took it down. ![]()
Other fun examples from whitehouse.gov/petition:
Nutty people are nutty.
And of course there was the petition to secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016, which got 34,435 signatures and an official response from the White House.
Only an idiot would say it wasn’t “largely motivated by misogyny” but it was motivated by other factors as well.
Remember it began with him stabbing three Asian-American males to death and he expressed plenty of racist sentiments, but no one would argue that racism was his only motivation.
Oh, I completely agree. Chief among the other factors, AFAICT, is the fact that the guy simply couldn’t process reality. I am not qualified to diagnose mental illness over the internet or in any other medium, but in every non-clinical sense he was clearly stark raving bonkers.
And then there was the petition for an executive order inserting Daniel Bryan into the main event of WrestleMania, which got 100,000 signatures before it was pulled down.
Of course, Bryan did end up in the main event anyway, so I guess sometimes the system works. ![]()
My brother has made a number of remarkably stupid “men’s rights” comments. Idiot Bro is about to be forty, has never been in any kind of long term relationship, works a menial job and lives with my dad. I think that about sums up the kind of losers here. He and my dad have basically explained to me that they think I should live near them not necessarily so that can enjoy my company or the company of my two darling daughters. I should live near them so that I can “help out.” Help out as clean up their house as well as my own. Because cleaning up, as they have implied, is really women’s work. And even though I work a full time job, watch two kids and spend about half an hour each day doing housework, I should also clean after their lazy, sexist male asses. The two of them have decided that it is unfair on some level that after my mom’s death they must now either clean up after themselves or pay a fucking maid. Because that’s how the two of them think.
More sandy vagina whining.
Actually, I’d like to take a bit of exception to aspects of these remarks that reflect societal attitudes that I think are somewhat unfair to men (not necessarily to your dad or brother in particular, who may well deserve all the scorn that’s going, but to men in general).
Can we all just agree that people should not automatically be despised as “losers” or unworthy human beings simply because they don’t have the typical status symbols of adult life?
My late brother, for example, never lived totally independently or became financially self-supporting, and had only late and minimal experience of relationships. He struggled with emotional illness issues all his life. But he was one of the smartest, most principled guys you could hope to meet, worked hard for years in school trying to get his degree, volunteered for local campaigns, was kind and supportive to his mother and sisters, helped his neighbors, and so on and so forth. He didn’t blame other people for his troubles (except when he was having really dissociative episodes and talked crazy).
He jumped off a balcony at age 50 because he could no longer stand the shame of feeling “broken” and thinking he was worthless and undeserving of society’s respect. The stigma just crushed him. I’m no MRA, but I do think this sort of “loser” stigma tends to be more harshly applied to men than to women, because men are the ones who are traditionally supposed to “prove themselves” by their “success” in life.
Having superb achievements and loads of enriching emotional fulfillment is great, but I don’t think people who don’t get them necessarily deserve to be despised. There are a lot of so-called “successful” jerks out there with fancy cars and beautiful third wives who IMHO don’t make anywhere near as positive a contribution to the world as my brother did.
Well, you’re right, those guys ARE losers. Not because of their employment history or relationship status, but because they’re sexist lazy jerks. (My brother would just have laughed at any guy who suggested that it was his sisters’ job to clean up after him.)
Stick to your guns about not doing their damn housework in addition to all your own tasks, and let them pay for a cleaning lady if they want somebody else to do it.
