I live in the real world. Petitions with goals and signatures mean something. I’ve gotten politicians to not only take note but to show up at organized meetings based on them. This is in direct contrast to pointless civil disobedience for the sake of it with no clear goals other than some Walter Mitty narcissistic need for attention.
Maybe they can take up camp on your doorstep. That would please us both. You can march to their drum beat and bring them hot chocolate while discussing how brave they were to stand up to da man. Don’t forget the little marshmellows.
No, that’s not accurate on a number of levels. First, they are disturbing the community around them. Second, the park in New York is not zoned for housing. At best they have constructed a long term shanty town.
The bankers dishonestly foreclosed on homes. They lied to their customers and sold stocks while they were secretly putting money against them. They bribed the S& P people and paid them to give false ratings. They sold more SWAPs than the total amount of money that exists on the globe. Which means they could not pay them if something went wrong. That is fraud.
But on the other hand, MAGIVER is annoyed by noise in a park she did not go to and will not go to. I guess that is equivalency.
Actually the people in the community around them are annoyed about the noise. I’m just commenting on how retarded these people are because they have no addressable goals for which to terminate their brave brave displays of civil disobedience.
I miss where you were appointed to speak for the residents. Did your polling include people who do not feel that way or are you blurting more right wing propaganda as fact?
If your neighbor stole my bank account would it be okay for me to go to the right of way between your properties and beat drums all hours of the night, shit on your yard, put up a tent and make it known I had no goal and probably would be doing that for years?
I don’t think OWS as a group are all about being dickheads, but it only takes a few to make them seem like it. If they want to represent the 99%, then respect them.
If the bankers took down the world economy. put the country is enormous debt after committing financial crimes ,and then followed by be demanding tax money to make them whole, would you bitch about that? That is what happened. Perhaps you are at peace with that, but many are not.
There are not drums being beaten all hours of the night. that is another falsehood. The string o9f BS is getting deeper.
Damn is it impossible for you to focus on the real crimes? Thanks that there are plenty of people out in the cold doing it for you.
When do you boo Obama? When you boo him, then I admit you are serious about disliking everything that occurred. You should be spewing vile hatred at bankers, politicians, and when Michael Moore shows up they should throw eggs right between his third and fourth chins. He has paid money to get things he agreed with pushed. By donating sums of money to groups, to politicians. If the signs I see are correct they shouldn’t embrace him, because he is using his spot in the 1% to say how the 99% should be.
I am no economist, I know some about economics so wow me. Tell me how you can just direct this at the bankers? And not the helpers? You know the politicians of both stripes who played along with them?
One more issue your OWS is about the bankers, what about those that hate all corporations, what about the ones who want a global commune, on and on and on. You see why we as a civilized society should want them to follow the rules? Because they could be there for a long time. Stop annoying the neighbors.
Neither are the streets of Pasadena, but nobody gets their knickers in a twist when thousands of people camp overnight for a week to secure seats for the Rose Parade. So long as your intent is trivial, no problems!
All I did was post a cite showing legitimate complaints of people who live within the law regarding those who aren’t. It’s not a matter of polling anything. There is no popular vote for disturbing the peace or other laws that are broken. You can’t base a debate point by trying to make it about me.
Besides a continuous rant about evil bankers you have not made any case for the behavior of these people. they have no right to squat on private or public property. While it’s sad to watch these people wasting their time it’s sadder that they deliberately do it at the public’s expense.
Why don’t they come during the day and leave at night? Are they afraid they wouldn’t be allowed back in? If the police and park say they can come back following the open/close schedule of the park wouldn’t the demonstration be just as effective?
I am genuinely trying to find out the groundwork here, I mean they already lost the 15 minute game imho. Now they don’t want to lose the common man.
"Curbside viewing space for the Rose Parade is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The City of Pasadena lets people set up along the route starting at noon the day before the parade, and the best spots are taken soon afterward. Overnight camping on the street is permitted, and fires (in fire-safe containers which are off the ground) are allowed if it’s not windy. "
The other is an un-permited, unlimited attempt at squatting on public and private land which was overlooked for at least a day at every location it was engaged at.
Most cities will accommodate a parade or public gathering within reason regardless of the nature of the event. The occupiers event does not fit this criteria in any way.
I get that they may not be allowed in and that’s why I said with an agreement.
The second part I think is wrong, they lost the 15 minutes I referred too. Now to succeed they should do something productive, be it locally or nationally. I spend most of my day avoiding work by reading news and whatnot, and though I cannot provide a cite or anything other than personal observation. I have seen OWS go from front page to scroll down three quarters of the page to nothing at all on front page. On almost all mainstream news websites. If they wanted to be provocative and sit in like they should have sat around that big bull or in the lobby of BofA. They are in a park, provoking innocent neighbors, bad strategy.
Why do they need to be front page? They are occupying as a reminder not a confrontation. The confrontations are caused by cops and authorities. Just leave them alone and they will be fine. If you are suggesting the importance is fading, then that is another reason to leave them alone.
The fact that authorities have a need to defeat them, gives them more relevance. If they did not matter, they would ignore them. Since they are not, it is proof they are hitting a nerve.
Possibly. But that is up to the police and courts to decide, not us.
As I said, if the police and/or courts come up with a credible health and safety issue, then they can be shut down. But here we’re entering a grey area, because there is a difference between a “shanty town” and a protest. When the latter becomes the former is up to the courts to decide.
In short, we have a process in pace to address the issues you raise. That process will play itself out. As of now, the courts have not acted.
If the courts did act it would be screamed about no matter which way it went. I think of this movement was looked at honestly, they would get more Joe The Plumber support if they would respect those around the protest points.
It was never explained to me, how the occupiers in NYC are being provocative, to me that would be sitting inside the lobby of BofA, on the trading room floor, around the bronze bull thingie. As it is they are occupying a private park and on occasion marching to rich peoples homes/businesses. That is the only provocation tactic I have seen.
Let me get this out of the way, I have issues with the stock market. Sure it helps my retirement so I am part of the problem I guess along with millions of other people. A lot of the complaints being voiced, I actually agree with and my limited knowledge of economics allows me to see some of the problems we as a people are faced with. I do not understand some things, like how if WalMart makes 10 billion profit a year the stock goes up but the next year if they make 10b again the stock usually goes down. Unlimited growth is impossible, so Walmart raises prices, cuts benefits, wages, closes stores for the next year to make 11b and the stock goes up again. Eventually you have to hit the wall, so yeah I have issues, maybe brought on by ignorance but issues anyway.
I agree with some of the complaints. I just do not agree with the methods being used in any manner. Not to pull someone out of another thread, but someone in this forum said he believes someone is being irrational because they would physically fight to protect the constitution where electing like minded individuals would accomplish the same results.
The problem is I do not see many, if any, politicians above the very local level who have not benefited from the “1%” so I see the frustration the OWS has building! They however are not doing a damn thing to disrupt the 1%, only disruption is on the local people who may want to enjoy the day in the park, or a night free of extra noise.
