I was hoping for some insights on this term. I hear it occasionally. I know the meaning they are trying to convey yet it just seems so out of place every time I hear it. Would a doctor ever release someone form the hospital with a “Clean Bill of Health”? Do Doctors ever use this term?
I want a “Clean Bill of Health” to frame up and put on the wall. along with my fake degrees I keep meaning to get.
Recall that the word “bill” indicates a publicly posted notice (as in the order “Post no Bills” or the advertising product, the billboard). The Public Health Service and its predecessors were originally tasked with keeping ship-borne disease from invading the country, which is why the Surgeon General wears a naval uniform. Later, when fighting epidemics of cholera or influenza and so forth, “bills” were also posted at boarding houses, restaurants, and similar venues indicating that they had (or had not) passed inspections.
