I keep my kitties’ litter boxes in my basement on a cement floor that has been painted with water-proofing paint. I also use clumping cat litter in the boxes. So, like most cats, mine kick up a little litter onto the floor when they “do their business” and my cleaning method has been to sweep up the litter then try to mop the floor. I’ve used plain water, water with dish soap, and water with a mild floor cleaner. All of these methods leave a white film on the red paint. I don’t know what brand of paint it is and I’ve only just purchased the place back in September. Anyone have any suggestions on how to clean this floor without leaving the streaky film?
I am switching to another type of litter this week.
A lot of clumping cat littler is clay rocks with an additive to make them clump. It’s probably either the clay or the additive leaving a flim on the paint. If several rinses of clear water doesn’t bring it off, then I don’t know what. Repaint? Maybe the paint is having some weird reaction to the water, like a watermark on a piece of furniture? But I think that’s a bit of a stretch since this is specifcially waterproof paint.
By the by, the best litter I’ve found is called World’s Best (at least the name is honest). It’s clumping, but does so without additives. It’s made from corn, so you could flush kittie’s messes without clogging your pipes. And I’ve never had a problem cleaning it off of anything.
Thanks Pullet. Maybe I should try to just rinse and rinse and rinse until it comes up. Annoying, yes, but maybe this will do the trick.
Is the World’s Best litter expensive? I have three cats so I try to be frugal without being cheap.
I would be cautious about changing litters. The most common behavioral problem in cats is inappropriate elimination behavior. Many of these cases begin with a change in litter. Cats can be very particular about litter scent and texture.
I wish I could, the area where the boxes are (it’s the only practical spot to place them) is by a swell in the floor. A tree root had pushed the floor up so there is an unsightly lump in that room. A piece of vinyl or plastic would probably not sit well there unless the vinyl is fairly pliable. Is it?
