Cleaning in-ear phones?

I have managed to fill the tiny tiny little hole in one ‘ear’ of my semi-expensive earphones. This resulted in a significant imbalance in the volume between left and right.

During one of my bouts of complete-stupidness I decided to even things out by blocking the other phone with wax.
So, what’s the best way to clean the phones? Bearing in mind that there is one hole through which the sound comes, and it is very very small.

I forgot to finish that first sentence. Add ‘with earwax’ to the end of it.

Drugstores usually sell some kind of kit for cleaning wax out of ears–involves a liquid that dissolves the wax. If it didn’t react badly with the plastic and electronics, it would be a great idea, but there’s the if…

I would try to pick the wax out with a sewing needle. For some reason rubbing alcohol is coming to mind, also. I am trying to sort out the polar/nonpolar issue with my rusty organic chemistry; in any case it evaporates quickly and couldn’t hurt to try.

i can’t visualise your phones.

but just as a trivia, the best in-ear phones are made by etymotic research. ( www.etymotic.com ) they run $140 to $250 depending on model.

they have a soft silicon tip that is removable and washable.

My phones are not quite that expensive (they were about £29 if I remember correctly) They have removable rubber tip that sticks right inside the ear. The problem is the rubber tips only cover the outside of the ‘body’ of the phone, so the non-removable sound transmitting bit is still exposed to earwax. And I use them whilst lying with my head sideways on a pillow so on that one ear the phone is getting pushed right in.

Check out the Sony web pages to see if they have any information as to what cleaner to use.

Would suggest a water based detergent as a last resort. it won’t affect the plastic. Also try twisting up a small narrow strip of toilet tissue or Kleenex as a swab to dry clean the hole.

Henceforth, once clean and working lay your head on a big doughnut (pillow).
