It’s assholish behavior of the first order either way, no question. I just think it goes to the question of punishment and long-term rehabilitation. It’s one thing to beat up someone who has slighted you, but I just wonder if he has the self-awareness and humility to feel regret when he found out that the slight never actually happened.
It’s not just beating up someone. It’s Assault ith a Deadly Weapon. And all because the clerk thought someone wasn’t showing him the proper respect?! Which brings up another question: what does he think the proper respect should be for a discount store clerk? I mean, besides the normal courtesy one shows to another person.
The clerk is obviously dangerous and needs to be removed from society. If luck had landed his crowbar a quarter-inch one side or the other, a man would be dead.

This reminds me of something from my old job. A customer walked in. Someone called out a greeting. She just walked by. The following conversation ensued:
Salesperson #1: Did you see how that lady just walked by.
Salesperson #2: That was so rude. I hate when people do that.
Salesperson #1: Yeah. Like they were deaf or something.
Salesperson #3: What if she really was deaf?
Salesperson #1: Well, then we’re gonna feel like a couple of real assholes!
Sure enough, she turned out to be deaf, and we all had a good laugh at #1 and #2.

On the other hand, most people think they’re above average, so they may well support reproductive limits on the below-average people.
