Do the new McD’s touch-screen registers really have the little icons on them? When I worked at McD’s (and for a couple years after), teachers et al. would always be complaining about how stupid fast food workers must be if they couldn’t use a register that didn’t even have words etc on it but "pictures of the food!!"
Our registers never had pictures of food on them. That’s not saying that maybe some up-scale McD’s in bigger cities didn’t have that but I would think that pictures would be more difficult. I mean, when you’re in a hurry, do you really have time to look closely to see if that little burger icon has cheese on it or not? Or if it is a regular cheeseburger or a full Quarter Pounder? Not to mention the salads–“Hey, Jim, does that look like a chef salad or that chicken salad?”
I’m just interested to know if this is true or not and if it is, who thought it would be a good idea.

It’s true, evilbeth, I’ve seen 'em. I don’t know how long ago you worked at McD’s, I’m thinking maybe it was before the icon registers were everywhere. I agree, the icons probably make things more difficult for the, um, literate, the college student who is just trying to make some extra bucks or the retiree who wants some extra cash to supplement SS. But there are a lot of illiterate goons out there who literally can’t read the words “Big Mac, Fries, Coke” (some of them are high school graduates- a credit to our public school system) and they need the icons
Look GaWd, In this argument about the incompetence of Fast Food workers you voluntarily contributed personal information. How much you make a year has no bearing on anything, but you think it does. You seem to think your achievements give you some right to treat other people poorly. You are wrong. Go away, I’m through with you.

Just wondering 'cause like I said, the whole “pictures of food instead of words” UL has been around for many years. Incidentally, I last worked at McD’s in 1997.

I just reread my post and it sounded like I didn’t believe that the register pictures really exist. I just wanted to clear up that I was not saying that, I was just reiterating my need for proof (which I received!) Thank you.

Nope, the restaurant was less than three years old. That particular store also ran a satellite store that had touch-screen computers and they didn’t have the icons either. Weird.

Great. Now I have this urge to run to the McD’s across the street and see if they have icons on the registers. Hmmm…
In retrospect, it may have been a Burger King or a Hardees where I saw the icons on the registers. But the point is, they do exist, I’ve seen 'em. Of course, the keypad wasn’t all icons- there were some keys that had words on them, extra cheese, what have you…
But it was still kind of freaky to see.
Must fight urge to go on tour of fast-food joints in search of icons.
Uh-huh. Question, have you told the employees !? So tonight at about 11:15 I go by a certain restaurant (lets just say it rhymes with Smendys). The drive-through lights are on, the big sign at the front is on, the neon sign saying “pick-up window open” is on. I sit. I wait. I shout at the intercom “hello?”. I wait. I honk the horn. I shout some more. After about 10 minutes I give up. I drive around and look in the window - no one there. I drive past the front of the restuarant and see all the chairs stacked on the tables. Oh, except one. The one where 5 employees sit playing cards. I now have no food because they were on the clock ignoring customers, playing cards.
Smendy’s can bite me !!! I am going to look for an 800 number and let someone have it.
Hell yeah, a couple of weeks ago, we went to “Smendy’s” about a month ago and the sign said “Drive-thru open til 1am”. Of course we go at 12:30am and we wait for a few mins and then they say “oh we’re closed”. Well that’s not what your sign says. But I digress.
This is the most exciting thing I’ve seen since Halley’s Comet collided with the moon.
McDonald’s registers do not have icons. Even the older models (that aren’t touch screen monitors) don’t. The newer touch screen models are actually computers, and are used to run all store wide systems, and all manager functions. We aren’t talking about little pictures of Big Macs anymore.
I know this, because I worked in a McDonald’s as a manager until recently.
