CLEVELAND ??????????

Well my cousin Lori, is getting married this Saturday, in Cleveland and my parents and I are staying for three days. So I was wondering if anyone knew of cool stuff to do there?

So see an Indians game!!!

Indians?? Well I’m a Yankees fan but I guess I could sit through a Cleveland game.

I kinda wanted to know about the night life and the party seen?

Look for Drew Cary & Co.

The Flats. Just ask anyone to point you in the direction of the Flats in downtown and you’ll be a happy partier.

Get up at about five in the morning on Saturday, and go down to the West Side Market. They’re just opening up, and you’ll beat the crowds that show up by ten or eleven.

Check out all the great fresh fruits and vegetables in the outdoor stalls, then go inside and wander from stand to stand, looking at the handmade perogi and homemade kielbasa and Amish-made cheeses and fresh breads and pastry. Have a breakfast chili dog or two at Johnny Hot Dog, over in the southwest corner. Drink a cup of fresh buttermilk at Wendt’s dairy stand (still only a quarter). On the way out pick up a bratwurst sandwich at the stand in the northwest corner for lunch.

It’s a great way to spend the wee small hours of the morning.

Heh. He can’t. In a twist of irony that will have young Nick having a fit, this weekend the Indians are coming, well, here.

Well, he could go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Cleveland does rock, ya know! Ian Hunter said so!

[sub]I wouldn’t know, I’ve never been there[/sub]

Nick,

The Flats and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have both been mentioned. Good places, both. The Flats has a lot of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and some shopping. The Hall is cool, but a bit overpriced, in my opinion.

If you like museums, there’s also the Great Lakes Science Center near the Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Museum of Art is grand. The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum is cool too.

If you have time and you like Italian food, go to Murray Hill - it’s near Case Western Reserve University - and eat 'til you bust. Here’s a Citysearch link to Salvatore’s:

Citysearch is also a good place to look up any special events that might be happening when you are there.

There’s also Coventry if you are feeling a little alternative:

These are my favorite places.

-Play golf! There’s SIX golf courses w/in 5 miles of my house! And dozens more all over the city.

-Visit the Great Lakes Science center beside the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame.

-Do a “Hi Opal”.

-Take a snapshot of yourself climbing the “Free Stamp”. Just don’t the local constabulary catch you.

-Take a daytrip down into Amish Country.

-Pro Football Hall of Fame is in Canton, less than an hour south of Downtown Cleveland.

thank you all,
i’ll try to check out all those places and yes, romansperson i love italian food. I’ll definitly eat at murray hill. Although I’m still wanting to know where the coolest night clubs/bars are? Probably flats?, but which ones?

I don’t know exactly how much time I’ll have to site see, due to all the family stuff that will be going on.

But I know I’ll definitly party it up. This West Virginian will show those buckeyes how to party.

The Cleveland Museum of Art,
the botanical gardens nearby at University Circle
A Saturday performance of the reknowned Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, one of the best in the world.
A play at playhouse square.

If you like amusement parks, check out Six Flags, which is SE of the Cleveland in Aurora Ohio. Six Flags bought out two other amusement parks that had been there for years, Sea World and Geauga Lake Park, and consolidated them. They have coasters, water rides and other fun stuff.

As for the night life, you might also want to check out the Warehouse District, which is up the hill from the East bank of the Flats, although I haven’t any clue about which ones are hot. When you get here grab one of the local free alternative magazines, either “Scene” or “The Free Times” and scope out the club and music ads.

For future reference, for baseball, besides the Indians I also recommend the Akron Areos minor league team. They’re out of town this weekend too but they play in a very pretty little downtown ballpark.

Nick,

The highest concentration of bars/dance clubs/nightclubs is in the Flats and the Warehouse District (The Warehouse District is basically just an addition to the real Flats, which has grown enormously since the early 80s). Here is a realllly long URL from Citysearch which lists all the bars there and what types they are - it says there’s a total of 57, but there’s probably really more than that! The original Flats area is concentrated enough that you can just walk around and go in to a place that looks interesting to you, too.

Oh, and nearby in Ohio City is the Great Lakes Brewing Company, on Market Ave. It’s a restaurant/bar that makes its own beer, and DAMN is it good. The food ain’t bad either!

I’m jealous, thinking of you in Little Italy eatin’ up all that grub … it’s hard to come by really good Italian bread and cannoli where I live now.

I would suggest going down to the Cayahoga River and roasting marsmellows over the oily flames. Always fun for the whole family!

Several mentions of the Art Museum (with good reason… One of the best in the country, and it’s still free admission!), but while you’re in the neighborhood, head across the Circle to the Natural History museum, too. It always was good, and they’re continually improving it. The Art Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Auto and Aviation Museum/Western Reserve Historical Society are all right next to each other around University Circle, and the Botanical Gardens are very close by, as well.

The public park system (called the Metroparks) is one of the largest in the country. It’s mostly wilderness-type parks, not planted, and there’s lots of good hiking and biking trails. The Metroparks also run the Cleveland Zoo, which is pretty good.

If you’re in the North Coast Harbor area (where you’ll find the Rock Hall and the Science Center), you might also want to check out the Mather, an old freighter which has been converted to a floating museum, or the Cod, a WWII shipkiller submarine.

There’s off-Broadway shows at the Playhouse Square theaters downtown, and you might be able to catch the Cleveland Ballet or the Orchestra… I’m not sure what their schedules are.

Not that I’m a bar fly or anything, but one of the best bars in Cleveland is Hoople’s Down Under–especially if you will be there on a Thursday night. You will be able to see one of the finest local musicians, Glen Schwarz. He is absolutely amazing. He used to be in The James Gang, quit before they recorded an album (Joe Walsh replaced him), and went to seek his fortune on the West Coast. After hearing of Jimi and Janis’s deaths, legend has it he went to live under a bridge in his car in Cleveland until some hoodlums burned it down. (The car, not the bridge.) And now he and his brother play in this Cheers-esque bar in Cleveland. Anyway, he’s very cool. Definetly worth checking out.

Downtown Cleveland, Coventry, University Circle and Little Italy are all very close to eachother. I guess the only things left to check out would be Tower City and the Terminal Tower (although it’s been years since I’ve been to the Terminal Tower and I have no clue if it’s still fun or not. Or, for that matter, if it ever was.)

Don’t go to the Agora.

And this is different from Cleveland’s idea of culture how?
