clicky/freezy computer

Okay, I can’t do a decent search to see if this has been adressed before, because my computer will freeze any minute now, I’m sure.

I am running Windows ME…don’t know if that matters.

For the past several days the computer has started to make clicking noises while I am using it. It will then freeze up, and after manually restarting, I won’t be able to get far without having the same problem for several hours. After a while I can get on for a little while and then it will click and freeze up again.

I know very little about computer stuff so I have no idea what the problem is. Hard drive? I haven’t defragmented in a really long time…is that the problem?? I just would hate to waste what little time I have defragmenting. I really need this computer and I don’t currently have the money to get it fixed so…give me good news please.
please.

The clicking noises could be the sign of a hard drive that’s about to fail. I recommend that you make sure you have good backups of any important data. Also, try to make a list of the software installed on the system in case you need to rebuild it if it does fail. Ideally, you should just replace the hard drive now, when it’s still working, but you mentioned being short of money.

I have an IBM Netvista/ME sitting in a closet corner for the same reason which you outline.

I worked with IBM and AOL Tech services for more than two months trying to track down the cause.

After having been told several times that, among other things, it "Might"be the hard drive, the mother board and even a modem problem I crunched some numbers and shoved it into the aforementioned closet corner.

Since I no longer use a computer for anything but entertainment-I bought a “down and dirty” H-P [the Walmart Special] and I’m happy with it AND iy’s “Molasses in January” speed.

I’m not interested in speed, bells or whistles------all I need is the internet and all it offers in the form of information gathering, news and entertainment features which keep my gray-matter in flux.

The irony is that my Lady Wife has the same Ibm machine that I deep-sixed and it’s still plugging away day in and day out--------------actually,now, year in an year out.

If you’ve got all of the other auxialiary units---------throw in a new tower and dump the thing!

"at’s wutt I did!
