CLIÉs and Macs: The New Odd Couple?

I’m getting a PDA of my choice for my birthday this year, and I’ve pretty much settled on the Sony CLIÉ SJ20 or SJ22. (I don’t need to play MP3s or take digital photos.)

Biggest possible hitch: I use a Mac, currently running OS 9. I’ve heard that:

a) CLIÉs and Macs aren’t compatible. I think this is Sony’s party line, and it’s apparently not true.

b) You need software like The Missing Sync to make the connection work.

c) CLIÉs and Macs hotsync fine, regardless of what Sony says, without Missing Sync.

I don’t have a handheld now, so sorting through some of this information is confusing. Does anyone have any experience syncing CLIÉs and Macs? Should I plan on getting The Missing Sync?

An update, and answers to my own questions, for the record:

I got a Clié SJ22. It works great. And it syncs fine with my iMac running OS 9 without The Missing Sync.

I did download current Palm Desktop software from palm.com, since the version that came with the Clié is obviously PC-only. At first, HotSync would run and download software to the Clié, but was not updating the Address Book, Memo Pad or To Do List. The Log gave me error message 1852402768. After a bit of Web searching, I found a Handspring support page that gave correct instructions on fixing the problem.

There’s also a Mac-related forum at cliesource.com that features some handy info.

No idea, but I adore my Clie. Roomie gave it to me as a Christmas gift (our last year of living together, he doesn’t typically give Christmas gifts, so he said this was to make up for the past three years of not giving me a gift…I love him:), and that thing has become a favorite of mine. I have a tendency to lose address books, so now I put the addresses all into my Clie and the damn things stay there:).

I’m also contemplating buying a Mac for grad school (Macs seem to be more compatible with music composition software), so it’s nice to know that they’ll work together.

Good for you, and good to know it works. Been looking at the SJ20 or 30 myself, and I run OS X.

Happy birthday, too!

Okay, okay, okay, someone answer a question that’s been plaguing me since the damn lil’ gadgets were introduced…

How the heck do you pronounce “Clie”?

Assuming the OP’s spelling is correct, and it’s not an acronym, it’s pronounced “Tiny Freedom Computer.”

Alternately, it would be “Clee YAY.”
