Clinton v Trump - The Stretch Run Thread

But he did say the case was reopened. That’s key.

No he didn’t.

Cite? Because, as just said, no he did not.

Again, it has been portrayed as that but here is his actual memo with his proffered explanation. No reopening. Just taking appropriate steps to obtain and review the emails that are in Justice possession (not theirs) and letting the American people (note, not just Congress, his intent was the American people) know in a brief letter that he knew would be misunderstood.

That’s key.

Then again, the media needs to do its job and report their error. Because almost all major outlets reported that the case was reopened. There have been no corrections that I’ve seen.

What outlets are you watching? All the ones I have read made that distinction Friday afternoon. Minutes after the story broke.

It was that dude on Twitter that used the word “re opened”. I don’t think the media ever did. Except for maybe to hard right ones.

Looking at yesterday’s stories, it does look like they’ve been updated. Initially, CBS, NPR, and CNN had reported that the case had been reopened. I’m seeing no correction, however, just a note that the story has been updated and now references to the case being reopened have been removed.

That does not undo the damage of the initial reporting.

The case has been reopened in the court of public opinion.

In formal, legal court, no it has not been reopened. It was never really closed.
I don’t trust that nobody has already read these e-mails. I think they are using the fact that they are required to get permission to read them to imply that they have some incriminating evidence which they aren’t legally allowed to disclose.

It is the sequel to Geraldo Rivera’s plundering Al Capone’s lost vault on live TV- huge ratings, but the big reveal is that there is nothing inside whatsoever.

Of course I don’t know for sure what is in these emails. But I am not going to view Hillary as a criminal until they do better than this (and besides, whoever wins the election, I am sure the next President will have a lot of IT support). Is Comey implying that he has new evidence indicating that Hillary should have been criminally charged in the email server case? OK. What evidence is that?

Specifics or I tune this story out.

As I’ve said a couple times recently:

Cynicism is evil. It provides an excuse to expect nothing but the worst from others while simultaneously excusing all the worst in yourself. It’s lazy, selfish, and ignorant all tightly wrapped into a toxic ball of nasty.
IMO CNN is grossly failing in its duties by beating the equivalence drum.

Yes, it was. Good call.

I almost never watch CNN, so maybe I’m missing something. But it seems to me that all the networks are invested, not so much in fall-equivalencey, but in making this seem like a horse race. Continuing the sports analogy, when one team is up 3 touchdowns and there’s only 5 minutes to go, the fans start leaving the stadium.

The solution to that lies in the collective hands of the television-watching public, and it is to stop watching television “news” channels.

Come on, everyone knows reality has a liberal bias.

Comey is exactly as impartial as Lynch. They’re both human, they’re both biased.

And yeah, I am guess it is easy for people at the Justice Department to talk about following the law since it’s their job. Apparently you think they shouldn’t do things like that? Maybe they should just start giving press conferences about people they are considering investigating.

“We just wanted to let you know we are looking into Congressman Davidson for corruption & child abuse. We don’t actually have any evidence yet, so soon as we get a search warrant and start investigating, we’ll get back to you.”

The most surprising thing about Maher’s commentary: the image of Noam Chomsky listening to a sports call-in show.

Explain something to me: the emails are between Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner…correct? Couldn’t they all be about whose turn it is to pick up the kids?

We apparently don’t know anything else – just that a trove of email from the Private Server turned up in the course of the Weiner investigation.

Jeezuschrist, if Hillary’s decision to install a server in her house sticks us with 4 years of Trump…I swear…

While it is only one poll, a Washington Post-ABC poll finds the race within one point following Comey’s statement, though 63% of respondents said that it did not change their mind.

Certainly wouldn’t have been in the first hundred things I guessed Chomsky did when he wasn’t waging his long, lonely war against the evils of American imperialistic capitalism.

And since people like cable news and like internet web sites that provide news that ain’t happening. People want arousal. Controversial and dramatic news catches eyeballs and with the way we are wired that is not going to change.

That is actually not a thing that we seem to be apprised of: the statement said that the e-mails were on a different device, which means that they were not on the server-of-infamy. Huma worked for State, et al, so her stuff could shed some light on what went on in there, FWIW. If her device were to reveal classified material that was obviously sent in cleartext, that would be a bad thing, as it would unequivocally show improper handling of top secrets. They are not going to find any of that, though.

Which could mean they were on Weiner’s cell phone, but sent from the SoI.

If Huma sent these emails to a shared family device, there’s no reason to assume that any of them originated from Hillary’s private server.

But the point is - not even Comey knows if these emails are meaningful, which is why his claim that he has to make a public announcement about it is false.
