Only just beginning…?
Pence has cancelled tomorrow’s fundraiser in NJ, which was one of only three events he has scheduled right now.
I’m thinking Trump throwing him under the bus tonight was the last straw; he’s gonna go for an “if elected I will not serve” way out, abandon the Trumptanic while there’s still room on the lifeboats, and start planning his 2020 run.
538 gave Clinton a 99.8% chance of winning California, so we don’t have to worry too much.
Before I read this I posted a joke online “I don’t think Mike Pence is voting Trump/Pence.”
That’s looking less and less like a joke.
Whatever 538 says, I’ll call this 99.5% Clinton wins. Only her death would stop the inevitable. Trump’s campaign ended tonight.
He COULD have maybe given himself a sliver of hope by, well, acting like a decent person. By truly apologizing, and by admitting fault and saying he didn’t want to divide people, that he genuinely wanted to help people and he just wasn’t good at expressing himself. He could have joked at his own expense and said something like “I’m clumsy and arrogant… I try to be nice and I keep failing. But however bad I am at public speaking, and as you can see Sec. Clinton is ten times better at this that I am, I want to help. I love this country and everyone in it and I am going to change its direction for the better and prove my stupid words can be made up for my great deeds.”
But he can’t say those things because he doesn’t believe them, because he’s a horrible person.
You do understand that dreams do not constitute policy for the next four years, don’t you?
The idea of bringing everyone in the Western Hemisphere up to the point where we can open borders is not one I ever thought of, but is a great idea. Works pretty well inside the US, doesn’t it?
The way history seems to be going it does seem that “supra national trading blocs” are almost inevitable. Despite the UK backing out of the EU, the rest of the EU is fully committed and is going ahead with an “ever closer union”. Russia has the Eurasian Economic Union and CISFTA. South east asia has ASEAN and is aiming for free labour movement in future.
Now the US is big enough that they don’t necessarily have to be part of a bloc to be successful, but there is nothing wrong with the idea in principle, as long as it doesn’t become a race to the bottom in terms of wages and workers rights. As far as I understand the EU insists on certain protections in terms of workers rights etc before you can join the EU, so the idea can work in principle.
Just so long as we understand that it’s the end goal and we’re honest about it, I got no problems. We can debate the merits of what politicians actually believe. It’s much harder to debate what they are saying for public consumption.
Doesn’t sound good at all. There is a reason every country in the world has borders. People want to keep what they have worked for.
Whatever he salvaged from the debate might be a short-lived ‘victory’ as there are hints that more tapes exist. These include racist remarks caught on tape.
I’m in agreement that Geraldo Rivera’s not exactly a news source, but the man says he’s got evidence in hand.
As pointed out elsewhere, Rick Wilson and Ben Shapiro are both tweeting things to this effect – that Anderson Cooper’s insistence on getting a factual denial of sexual assault from Trump is almost certainly going to lead to more digging. It’s entirely possible Anderson already knows the truth and just wanted to get the admission on tape.
I may be way wrong on this but something tells me Trump is about to get slammed this week. I also suspect there’s a reason why some republicans are now jumping ship. They know something’s up.
Perhaps, though with GOPers there is also fear, panic and cowardice to consider.
I’m wondering if this is Trump fallout, or maybe Clinton fallout (or just really bad polling): Darrell Issa’s Challenger Opens Up Lead in Democratic Poll
With an appropriate number of salt grains applied to this poll I suspect Issa will hang on to his seat. But man, I would laugh myself sick if he lost.
Right, that’s why it takes so long to cross the border between France and Germany… oh wait…
It’s time to spread the jam on Trump because he is toast. Not that he ran a good campaign but this last week has been brutal. I don’t think he helped himself at all last night unless he’s got stock in decongestants. Just 29 days and we can see the last of this loser.
There is no physical border, inspections or passport checks between France and Belgium, or Belgium and the Netherlands, or France and Spain etc etc. And contrary to the ridiculous propaganda of the alt-right, Europe is a pretty nice place to work and live (and statistically safer than the US when you look at the US homicide and violent crime rates).
That’s the sort of thinking that leads to protectionism–but we’ve seen increases in total wealth when capital is free to flow across borders, even though it means that people can’t always “keep what they have worked for.”
I’ve long maintained that free trade deals would be a lot more palatable if workers were placed on at least an even footing with capital when it came to moving across borders. Even without restrictive laws in place to prevent workers from moving, social and familial realities make such movement difficult. Restricting the movement of labor unfairly rigs the system in favor of capital.
I wasn’t sure which thread to put this in but it really is about the campaign more than the debate.
Now this is the work of some truly deplorable people - a Jerry Springer level stunt that Rudy Giuliani and Steve Bannon tried to pull off at the debate and one that Trump approved of. These are the “best people” he has hired to help him. Can you imagine President Trump pulling something like this on a world leader he disagrees with? This really makes me furious. This is not a reality show! It scares me that people think things like this are fine from someone who wants to be the leader of the free world.
I’m kind of amazed at that debate commissioner, Frank Fahrenkopf, putting his foot down. Mostly, I’m amazed because he’s a former RNC staffer. The Trump camp isn’t used to being thwarted. It’s pity Reince Preibus doesn’t have Farhenkopf’s juice.
Can you elaborate?
Trump was hoping for a Jerry Springer-style fight.
