Because if they select Pence they will be voting for someone who was not selected by Republican primary voters. The lawsuits from Cruz and the other candidates who received votes in the primaries would make Bush-Gore look like nothing.
But the GOP is a private organization, so how would it be constitutional crisis or a matter for the courts if they decide to go with another candidate?
Because there are ballot deadlines. Plus a private organization has to have rules for replacing candidates already nominated and under what conditions that can be done. since there is no owner it’s not like Rance Priebus can just make a decision like that on his own.
