The point stands. These particular Mexicans are a subset of Mexicans generally, and their defining characteristic is their having committed a crime in illegally immigrating to the US.

Don’t think so, I do know that he said that “Texas was overrun by wetbacks”, but never mind that legal residents that came from Mexico or with Mexican parents number about 9 million, while the illegals number about 1 million. **Clothy **just did not made any effort on separating them in his wide brush. Point here that as other reported that slur has very little to do with being actually illegal, the ones that hate are not only using to point at the color of the skin or the features of the Hispanics, but also to let others know that citizens or legal residents should also assume that the targeted Hispanics are also criminals, that should not deserve any aid nor help.

Only when bigots are trying to justify their bigotry. I have heard the term used all my life by people that didn’t differentiate between Latinos in general and Latinos they think were here illegally.
Well, that’s the origin of the term, but I would say around here it is used much more loosely, to refer to Latinos in a derogatory manner, whether legal or illegal. Usually one does not check for immigration status when calling someone a “wetback.” Perhaps the word is used much more specifically in your area (though I still would consider it offensive.)
I’d like folks to remember this post next time Clothy is accused of trolling.
This makes me think of the discussion in the Pit a few years ago, in which (IIRC) I got New Deal Democrat to tell us how he really felt – that black people were “savages” who “spread their savagery” anywhere they went around the world. And now I pushed Clothahump to first defend his usage of an ethnic slur, and second to admit to trolling.

I wonder how many examples I could find, in ten minutes’ looking, of someone using “wetback” to refer not to illegal immigrants, but to Mexicans or Latinos in general, or a specific Mexican or Latino who is demonstrably not an illegal immigrant.
