I have a friend whose last name used to be Boehner (she married and changed it). She pronounced her last name “Beaner” (some pronounce it “Bayner”).
I saw her at a crowded music festival and tried to get her attention by screaming, “HEY, BEANER!!!” Got lots of nasty looks, and she didn’t hear me anyway.
In all the discussion of trolling, though, I’d like to point out that Clothahump really did use “wetbacks” (IIRC, the phrase was something like “Texas is being overrun by wetbacks”), and apparently has no defense for it.
Bullshit. An ethnic slur is an ethnic slur whether you mean it to be or not.
You get one chance to use it unintentionally. Then you will be told it is a slur. You are, of course, free to look it up or ask other people to be sure. But then you don’t fucking use it again.
If you do, you know some people take it as a slur, and are okay with them taking it that way. Now that you know how people will interpret it, if you use it, you are using a slur. You don’t get to have your own definition of what words mean.
If we had it your way, then anybody could claim they didn’t mean it as a slur. When has that ever been acceptable in society? You hear your kid saying “nigger,” do you tell them it’s okay, since they aren’t racist? No. You tell them that the word is racist and that, if they use it, people will consider them racist.
It’s just how meaning works. Words mean what society agrees they mean, regardless of your intent. Precisely because we can’t read your mind, people take what you say to be what you mean.
And as for not using it for everyone–most racists don’t use “nigger” for black people they like. So that argument fails even if nothing else I said above was true. It double-fails.
In my original post to this thread, I said “It would seem now that it’s an ethnic slur, but that’s the term evolving, and it’s possible that some people still use it in the old sense.”
An unmitigated racist douchebag, who thinks that other races are inferior to his, and loves the current political atmosphere which has emboldened him to express his vile, asshole-ish views. In which case, he really should be banned.

Mind you, Trolling is not much an issue in the Pit, but looking at the history of the slur and how most do recognize that it is directed at all Hispanics the real reason to report him is for hate language, not trolling when on the pit.
Any conservative Doper who pays the slightest attention to how many “points” he gets from liberals on this board is going to be very unhappy in the long run.
In all seriousness, how surprised were you by Clothy’s admission of trolling? I’ll admit to being (pleasantly) surprised. I figured he was going to offer more rationalization.
. . . it’s not about the use of “wetbacks,” but an admission of using a slur specifically to get people to accuse him of trolling. I am not nor have I ever been a mod, and I know that this kind of discussion maybe belongs in ATMB, but this seems to me to be an obvious and admitted violation of board rules.
Did not strongly said that it was not, only that the focus should be the hate language, IMHO Clothy is stupidly thinking that by using the Troll fig leaf he can get away with it. But I see your point.
