CNN not reporting Saddam interview

I’m watching BBC and CNN. Saddam gives his first interview in over a decade to the BBC, and there is not a word of it mentioned on the CNN website.

Maybe if I wait a bit longer CNN will report on this event. If they don’t, why not?

Note: Smilie is also a hyperlink. And you might want to look at that front page again, just to the right of all the space shuttle stuff.

I heard that if he gets deposed he’s agreed to star in Celebrity Big Brother IV with TV’s Urkel, Corey Haim, Shannon Doherty, and the not-quite-late Mickey Rooney.

I heard it was going to be Surreal Life II.

CNN has been mentioning this interview all day on TV.

That’s a lie. He’s appearing in the new show “Dating Dictators” where he rides around in a limo with babes in a hot tub.

Yeah, there is a web page on CNN, but the television coverage has been pathetic. One or two sentences. Honestly, Wolf Blitzer paid more attention to Michael Jackson’s interview, Courtney Love’s airplane antics, and Yugoslavia’s name change. That doesn’t seem right to me.

Admittedly it’s likely that Saddam is propagandizing to pre-empt Colin Powell’s report on Iraq. Sure whatever Saddam says is completely unreliable. But I would hope that we could watch the man who is slightly involved in the next possible war. Don’t you think?

Just to be pedantic, it wasn’t a BBC interview but Channel 4. Here’s a link to the full transcript and interview tape:

Handsome bugger, ain’t he. Doesn’t dye his hair, either…

What on earth makes you think CNN even has authority to air another network’s interview? And what on earth is the debate in this thread? “Resolved: All television news should be tailored to FranticMad’s specifications.” Feh, I say.

I would imagine that this is pretty similar to his life now except without the television cameras around to follow it.

When Saddam gets into the ring with Tonya Harding in Celebrity Boxing, someone PLEASE call me!

THEN, after the two-sentence uber-summary of Saddam’s speech (i.e. a dumbed-down, inadequate representation of an issue), they show 4 minutes of a BBC guy talking about their interview with Michael Jackson, fer crying out loud. They even delved into the British press reaction to the MJ interview. So MJ slept with boys but didn’t have sex. WOW. THAT’s important, and such a SURPRISE!

Where are CNN’s priorities? That’s a rhetorical question because it’s obvious. Schlock and trivialities. Maybe they’re mad because Channel 4 (thank you for that link, London_Calling) got the scoop. I don’t know what their reasons are, but it doesn’t look like ethical, balanced, or intelligent reporting.

CNN should watch BBC sometime, and learn how to do news.

Allow me to repeat myself.

  1. What on earth makes you think CNN even has authority to air another network’s interview?

  2. What on earth is the debate in this thread?

Please do me the courtesy of responding this time.

Um, you like BBC so much, watch the BBC! It is available almost everwhere. Can’t get it on tv? It’s on the net and short wave radio. I’m with Minty here, what is your point, CNN sucks? We all kinda know that.

Glad we’re all agreed on that. There is no debate.

<laughs at Minty>
He still didn’t respond to you!

  1. I didn’t say that CNN should air the interview, but they can discuss what they saw, what they know, and what they think. At the very least, they can bring in others who do have the ability to perceive Saddam’s state of mind, his posture, the truth of his statements, how the Arab world will think of what he says, what Iraqi’s will think of it, and how this could influence Powell’s impact when he reveals the evidence. CNN does not need to show the interview for that.

  2. No one debates my sentiment, aside from pointing out the fact that I do not sit on CNN’s editorial staff. Hence, there is no debate apparently. This is my first post to GD, so I may misunderstand the protocol here. But the passivity of the response is worthy of note (but only in my opinion).

in my previous post, Iraqi’s=Iraqis (for you grammarians out there)

Hey, gimme time to type!

The issue with this interview is that AFAIK it’s somehow owned by “Arab Television Network” and they’ve been flogging the interview round networks.

It may be that CNN thought it just wasn’t worth the cash, or that Channel 4 got the rights exclusively.

Now that’s more like it! That’s 8 million times more than I was revealed by the drone-like reportage at CNN.

As a further nitpick, the BBC don’t deserve the blame for that pile of garbage either (it was ITV). We do have more than one television station over here y’know.
