I go to Al Jazeera America. The BBC is my second choice.
The site now looks like one of those chintzy “optimized for mobile phones” sites that you never use because desktop sites look just fine on any smartphone made since 2010 anyway.
Ironically, on my actual smartphone, it’s nigh unreadable - all that shows up in default resolution in Chrome is the banner headline and the foreheads of whoever’s in the top story photo.
Agreed. It shows up on my iPhone 6 with a banner at both the top and bottom, leaving a small “window” to navigate.
Not at all an enjoyable experience.
Very difficult finding the news headlines. Badly disorganized.
They got us all by the Nads. I have to go there for headline news. Much as I hate the layout. CNN is the best source for national news.
I’ll spend more time on the BBC for a lot of my news.
AdBlock blocks the crawl for me on Chrome. But the rest of the site is still awful, so it isn’t necessarily a useful improvement.
I want nekkid pictures of Ashliegh Banfield!
Huh, I have AdBlock but using Firefox on my PC.
CNN was the last national news site I frequented that didn’t require you to endlessly scroll to get a decent number of headlines grouped in a way that made some sense. I’ll have to track down a good news aggregator or start page site now. I’ve been putting off doing that since iGoogle went away anyhow.
I agree. Sigh.
The thing I hate is when you get a notification of a story on the phone. You click on it it and CNN opens up to a generic page with everything but the story you wanted. I always just google the headline now to find the story.
CNN lost me when they did three things:
-
Mandatory video autoplay. No way around it without plug ins or messing with your browser settings. Absolutely fucking annoying.
-
30 second commercials before EVERY video, even if you’ve already watched one and even if the video is only a minute long.
-
Last straw was a few months back when they started loading up the page with headlines such as “You won’t believe what happened when he did THIS; Her reaction to the package has to be seen to be believed!; This boy went fishing and found THIS under the pier”.
So I’m done. Went and looked at the new layout and it looks worse than ever.
Bye CNN.com!
This is Retro. But have you looked at Yahoo’s front page recently? Centered on the page. Simply scroll straight down. Its a nice layout. Click **News **to filter out the entertainment news. **Local **has good stories.
I found my new homepage. Feels like 1999. But its better than CNN’s crap.
Thanks for suggestions. CNN.com is horrid. Feels weird to be going back to Yahoo as a resource, but here I go…
Skip the Yahoo home page (yahoo.com) and use news.yahoo.com instead to go directly to the main news page.
Thank you for the direct link to yahoo news. Thats much better than their front page. They have a really clean layout.
I quickly discovered their link to local news goes to a pay site. No thanks. I can go to my local tv news web pages for free.
I had to tweak it - Click on the Adblock icon, and select Block an ad on the page. Select the crawl, and then play with the slider that Adblock gives you until the crawl vanishes. I think I had to move it one notch.
Both Bing news and Google news have a better interface than CNN and NBCNews.
I found it interesting that the feedback page claims to be for beta feedback.
I have a hard time considering it beta when it was rolled out to the entire audience, replacing the previous version. That’s a full release, no matter what you call it.
Another vote for it being awful. I’m not a big fan of change for change’s sake, and this was not good. It was better later in the day than when I looked first thing, but it’s such an ugly mess.
