CNN's new home page

Have you seen this monstrosity? Oh my god, it’s just so stupidly busy. Truly designed for today’s short attention span consumer. I can’t even stand to look at it.

:eek::eek:

I know…it really sucks for a news outlet. I gave up the various NBC news sites for the same reason when they redid theirs.

It’s already enough work to find real news stories, and guessing what might be behind the obscure headlines. Now this…no thanks. It’s out of my regular rotation.
Sadly, more and more sites seem to be doing this. I assume it produces more page views, and thus ‘works’ from a business perspective.

I may get used to it eventually, but my first reaction was WTF. I’d rather see the news I may be interested in without having to scroll and sort through all the chaff.

I just tried to pull it up, and after a couple minutes, all I had was the logo and some headlines to fluff stories at the side. Nothing else had downloaded.

I really didn’t go there all that much anyway.

Ugh, ugh. I used to go there a lot on my cellphone (mobile) because it was almost all text. Damn, CNN.

They could’ve at least make the tiny effort of writing EspaÑol and MÉxico in the names of their international editions (not the URL).

Reuters is my go-to. And CNN looks text heavy compared to MSNBC.

The dumbing-down continues, but in CNN’s case I’m not surprised.

Reuters, Aljazeera… any other news sites for grownups?

Yesterday, I almost changed my home page from Yahoo to CNN.

Now what?

cbsnews isn’t awful. Scroll through the list of stories, and you’ll hit the familiar groupings of articles by topic.

I like BBC America too.

Yuk! I used to use CNN as my home page.

news.yahoo.com seems pretty good.

You are correct about short attention span, but when you see a page go to big ass fonts and pictures, it’s been redesigned for mobile, which goes hand-in-hand with short attention span.

The funny thing is, a lot of the underlying links are to video-only, no text, but they pre-roll 30 second ads, which doesn’t exactly fit with the show-me-the-kitty NOW! mentality.

I hate the news ticker at the bottom of the page and their live stream that can be watched online got bad a few months ago. It went from just watching the stream to a news ticker at the bottom, links to news stories on the left side and links to news stories above the ticker. The default stream size is so small now it’s not worth watching unless you go full screen. When I’ve tried to watch without going full screen it makes me feel like I’m watching a stockbroking site or something with how busy it is. Here’s a screenshot. Sorry about the white popup on the bottom right side.

Home - BBC News iss easily my favorite for generic headline news.

Hate it. I stopped going to MSNBC when they went to their iPhone format. I was glad to see the CNN feedback popup, and I indicated how much I hated their new format. Hey, we’re not all Cool Kids with iPhones. Some of us still use laptops. I told them they needed more information and less flash.

Horrible. And what’s with the crawling headlines at the bottom of the page? Can’t turn those off.
Since WP and NYT went pay-to-view, I mostly check the BBC site for news.

Thanks. I just switched to BBC.

I have increasingly hated CNN due to their seeming preference for inane stories and ridiculous hype. The BBC has now replaced it on all my devices.

The SDMB, of course!!

I used their feedback page to send this:
