"cock of the walk"

I checked at Word-Detective, and didn’t see this. Anyone know where this phrase came from?

“My Accountz Reeceevable Posse don’t call me Tha Troubleshoota for nothin’. Suckas think I be chillin’, but I gots to represent at all times, 'cuz ain’t nobody else reeceeve accountz right but ME.” --Herbert Kornfeld

The Dictionary of Phrase and Fable is another good source for stuff like this:

Gypsy: Tom, I don’t get you.
Tom Servo: Nobody does. I’m the wind, baby.

I was in Jackson, Mississippi, and that was the best Catfish restaurant in town. They explained that the thugs on the docks (in their macho splendor) could be designated as the “Cock of the Walk”.

The catfish was superb, by the way.

Thanks for the info and the link, Alpha. I’ll check it before future postings of this sort.
