Coconut milk good or bad?

Word on the street is that it has lots of saturated fat; but that’s still a-ok because it’s plant based, so it won’t give you a heart attack in 50 years.

what is da STRAIGHT DOPE? Heart attack or health attack?

Tasty, is my vote.

Mmmm…wonder if I can talk the husband into going for Panang tonight…

This isn’t GQ? Ok:

As far as I’ve gathered, the most problematic fats are hydrogenated fats (like margarine) - “artificially thickened” plant fat (oils, really). With some moderation, eating saturated fats - even animal fat - isn’t a problem for healthy humans. Without moderation, any fat is bad for you anyway.

Personally, I’m more worried about the amount of sugars in coconut. Again, something that’s probably not that problematic in moderation.

This should probably be in great debates, and I won’t even get into the argument that eating saturated fat is not the cause of high cholesterol, but check out these abstracts:

One of the key points is that the fat in coconut oil/milk is composed of medium-chain triglycerides, something only found elsewhere in mother’s milk. MCT’s have a very different biochemical profile than other fats.

It’s a great ingredient in a curry.

Yup. Any further debate is rather pointless.
