Is coconut milk (canned) healthy or not?

I’m talking about the canned kind you mix with curry paste, used in Thai cooking. Some of us here would eat curry every day, some of us feel once a month because it’s not healthy, being full of saturated fat (but no cholesterol). So…?

Healthy v unhealthy is a pretty meaningless way to think about a food. Coconut milk, like any other food item, is not healthy nor unhealthy. Like any other food, you would probably die if you ate only that. Like any other food, if you were lacking in some nutrients that it contained, it would be good for you to eat some. Like any other food, if you are dangerously high in some nutrient in your diet, such as saturated fats, it would not be a good idea to eat a lot of it. By and large, a monthly helping of anything would be pretty much meaningless to your overall physical condition.

Oh. Well, thank you. Once a month it is.

Nutritional information for coconut milk. It looks to be quite high in calories (552 per serving) and saturated fat (50.7g – two and a half days’ worth!). That’s for a serving size of 1 cup.

I would use it sparingly if you are concerned about your weight or the amount of fat in your diet. On the other hand, it’s a decent source of fiber and iron.

If it’s curry you like, then I recommend exploring the curries that don’t involve coconut milk, such as those from North India.

Or at least use lite coconut milk instead.

I love North Indian curries, but they have quite a different flavor than Thai curries. But no worries, there’s plenty of non-coconut-based curries in Thai cuisine.
