Holy crap! I wanted to pick up some Coke Zero today but they were out of my usual 12-can cases. Yeah, I’m still buying it, especially because I find that if I pour it into an empty spring-water bottle, the extra fizz from drinking it that way makes it OK. Looking around for some other form of Coke Zero, I found six-packs of plastic “mini bottles” – 300 ml instead of the 355 ml cans, so not really so mini. There was a whole shelf of them, so I got two six-packs. It wasn’t until I got home that I realized that these packs had black labels, like the original Coke Zero, and nowhere did it say “New” or “Improved”.
I have no idea what’s going on, as this store has rapid turnover and this was obviously a large amount of new stock. I prefer to believe that the Coca-Cola Company has secretly re-introduced the original Coke Zero because of my heartfelt email complaint!
Well, dammit it all! Those really were the authentic old Coke Zero, I was not making it up, but I just bought four more cases of the same plastic bottles (they’re actually 8-packs, not six-packs) and behold, they are suddenly now “New and Improved!”. My feeling of superiority in lording over the Coca-Cola Company to bend to my will has vanished like the breath off a knife!
Oh, well, I like drinking it out of bottles. It gives it an extra fizz that helps to disguise the “New! Improved!” taste. Another way of disguising the taste, I found, was to mix it with about 50% rum.
For the record, I found the Kroger knock off to be a pretty decent drink. IIRC it’s $3 for a 12 pack of 78 cents for a 2 liter. Not sure why the preview shows it as “Product Unavailable.” Name: Big K Cola OH, has similar black and red packaging.
