Yep. The same thing happened/happens with Pepsi One*; the perfect marketing campaign would’ve been “hey, it’s diet that tastes more like Pepsi/Coke than Diet Pepsi/Diet Coke!” At least Pepsi One has a more distinct label design, but it doesn’t help it that much.
I have no clue why Pepsi and Coke seem to trip over their feet with the same basic product. It’s annoying. I’d love to be able to buy Coke Zero or Pepsi One in non-2L bottles, for Cripes’ sake.
You can only get Coke Zero in 2L bottles?
Here, it is available in cans and single bottles.
I can usually get it at just about any gas station.
I’ve seen it in 20 oz bottles, but I don’t like spending anywhere from 1.19 - 1.39 (including the 10¢ deposit) for one freaking bottle of pop. I want to buy my pop in the 8 pack of 20 oz bottles, but since they decided to stop that, I have to make do with the 16.7 oz or 24 oz bottles, or the 12 oz cans*. I’ve found the selection for packages of pop is much more limited than the single serve bottles at convenience stores et al.
Isn’t the 2L size a single serving?

(Drinks way too much soda… needs some now in fact)
There is a Pibb Zero, and it’s freaking delicious.
Personally, I prefer the splenda version of Diet Coke. It doesn’t seem to have anywhere near the repulsive aftertaste that regular Diet Coke has. Haven’t tried the Coke Zero yet but I can’t stand Aspertame so I doubt it is for me.
We are lucky enough to have a promotional Coke product dispenser at our local grocery store. You put your little Coke dixie cup under the fountain spout, press a button, and get a one-ounce sample of whatever they’re selling. I could have emptied that thing of Coke Zero when it was introduced! We bought some immediately. It is light years better than Diet Coke.
I don’t think that Coke Zero equals Coke Light in Europe. I’ve always thought it was the same as Diet Coke in America but was rebranded differently on the continent. I think its still called Diet Coke in the supermarket. Anyone try Pepsi Max? I think it is the Pepsi answer to Coke Zero, which is pretty too.
When we were in England recently, my wife kept insisting that Coke Light tasted like real Coke.
I just figured Coke Light was the European name for Diet Coke (though we evenetually found Diet Coke as well). But now I am not surprised to discover it was basically Coke Zero.
I’ve tried “Coke Light” in both England (or maybe France) and Argentina, and it is exactly the same as “Diet Coke”. Same taste, same logo and appearance even.
No, Coke Light is definitely different than Diet Coke. I have only Wikipedia to back me up that Coke Zero and Coke Light are the same thing, but I know from personal experience that in Spain, at least, Coke Light is not Diet Coke.

I hate aspartame too, but I love Coke Zero. I can’t taste the aspartame unless I think about it. (OTOH, I can normally taste aspartame in everything.)

I’d drink diet soda if I found one I liked the taste of. Usually I get a headache from anything diet (must be the aspartame or saccharine they use). I’d happily drink any sodas they use Splenda in, but I haven’t seen too many yet.
Have you tried the Coke Zero, Lou?
Is Diet Coke with Splenda just a regional thing or something, because I have never seen it in the store here in Las Vegas. The only low-cal versions of Coke I’ve seen are C2, Zero, and the regular Diet Coke, all of which contain aspartame.
I’m really curious about Diet Coke with Splenda. Any chance that’s going to be actively marketed by Coke???
Sodas I have found sweetened with Splenda:
Hansen’s Diet
Diet Rite
Coke Zero
here’s a list of products using Splenda: http://www.splenda.com/page.jhtml?id=splenda/products/prodwithsplenda.inc
At first sodas with Splenda tasted just like sugar sodas, but I quickly developed the ability to detect a chemical aftertaste. I don’t know why that happens! It tastes fine to me in ice cream and peanut butter though, so I don’t know what is up.
Many products are combining Splenda with another artificial sweetener Sunnett (Ace-K). Diet Rite is one of those so perhaps that’s what you’re tasting. The switch was supposedly due to “better flavor” when the two were combined. Without going into the Splenda debate, I’m not drinking Diet Rite until and unless they change it back.
I have a half a case of Diet Coke sitting in my garage. I can’t bring myself to drink it after having Coke Zero. I guess I might save it for a natural disaster or something, or perhaps cleaning my battery terminals. It makes great Jack(or Rum) and Cokes.
I am a late-comer to the party, but am happy to learn that Coke Zero has been around for a year or so now.
I rank Classic Coke among the 10 best modern inventions, but in the pursuit of health and weight reduction, I wanted to cut out my mid-day soda and its calories.
I recently tried Coke Zero at a friend’s house and thought “hey, self, this stuff tastes remarkably like Classic Coke, and surely the closest Coke has come to making a non-calorie version that tastes anything like Classic.” For the record, I cannot stand Diet Coke, and cannot drink it.
I am now on week 2 of Coke Zero consumption. I barely notice the difference, and just wanted to give a shout out to other Classic lovers who may be looking for an acceptable low-cal alternative.
