The colonel was stiff (maybe inhaling all that dry ice threw him off), but I think it was clear he was asked to play it straight. If he’d played along the whole time, the Decepticon line wouldn’t have worked as well.
Yeah, I think he played it just right.
That segment was brilliant! One of the best Colbert’s ever done. Although, I can’t help but think it would be improved if, instead of real commentators, Colbert had used actors scripted to play along with him. Then the fictional military and economic advisors could have proposed equally mad solutions to his crazy scenarios.
The Onion does stuff like this quite regularly and to great effect.
