I am worried about Steven Colbert

I do not generally watch US TV. After all, I am not generally in the US. I do like Steven Colbert.

I was a little worried about him before, from the few times I saw him when I was on vacation. Now I can put my finger on it.

I just saw his last few monologues. Gee, he talks about drinking heavily a lot. I seem to recall him doing that before too.

On one hand, I would welcome your thoughts. On the other hand, this thread appears as a matter of record in the event we do discover he has a problem.

I hope I am wrong.

MOST of us talk about drinking heavily a lot.

Since…hmmmmm…early November, 2016, anyway.

I talk about drinking heavily. And I honestly can’t remember the last time I had an alcoholic beverage. For me, it’s schtick - like when I’ve had a rough day at work, I’ll make a comment about heading for Happy Hour.

I have a bottle of Kahlua that’s been in the cabinet since <thinking> 2013 or 14? It might be half full. Kahlua and cream is my beverage of choice - so you can figure how often I choose it. Not to say that Colbert lives as I do, but I think that’s more likely than finding out he’s a drunk.

I’d be more worried if he wasn’t talking about it. See Jimmy Fallon who rarely talked about drinking but actually had a problem.

UCD Diver has a good point. Thank you.

He’s Catholic; it’s a cultural thing.

Colbert is OK I think. There’s this guy who really needs help though. I think his name is Foster Brooks.

Fallon actually drinks on his show all the time.

Yeah, his drinking is clearly out of hand.

He was supposed to give it up for Lent this spring but he was still tippling on the show.

He has a stash near his desk with a bunch of bottles of liquor and he usually ends his show walking out to the lobby and having a drink.

The man has a problem.

Trump is not an excuse to be non-stop drunk. For someone with his job, being sober is a must.

He did? I had no idea. I don’t follow any late nite stuff.

Oh yeah. See this interview with Jennifer Lawrence where he breaks out a bottle of rum and two glasses, and they both dip into it pretty heavily. They start around the three-minute mark, and Jennifer’s getting pretty happy by the end. The whole thing is great.

No, only half of us.

A statement that could be equally true from a dedicated tea-totaller or a black-out drunk.

Good point…

Since Jimmy Fallon’s drinking problem has been brought up, I’ve got to ask you to clarify your antecedents (I don’t know of Fallon being Catholic – not that that’s a necessity for someone to be observing Lent, but it does point more to Colbert, in which case I’d like to see a cite).

Late night talk show host? I’d put that near the top of the list of jobs where being sober is optional.

I have not evidence for this, but I suspect that Stephen Colbert jokes about drinking much more than he drinks to excess in real life.

Ditto. He’s kind of a square in real life. Doesn’t do a whole lot of hobnobbing with Hollywood types. (Or so I’ve been told.)

It’s a schtick.

I agree. Also plenty of his jokes are not written by him, but by a collection of writers. Comedy writers are not exactly known for being teetotalers (except of course Elliott Kalan).
