I’m mildly interested in collecting little metal model aircraft.
I’ve looked at Model Power’s Postage Stamp Planesand they seem fine – about $10-$15 each. They’re about 2-3 inches across and although “to scale”, they’re not to the SAME scale as each other, so the Spitfire will be slightly off-scale from the Mustang, for example. I have three that someone gave me, and they’re cute enough, but I’m not wedded to the brand. It does seem that they have a pretty extensive selection, though.
I recently ran across a different line of nice-looking ones in a store I seldom get out to, and wrote down the name of the line, but I’ve lost it.
Nosing around the web, trying to spark my memory, I’ve found Corgi’s Aviation Archive series. These do seem to be built to a fixed scale – 1:72. But that’s bigger than the Postage Stamp series – possibly too big for my shelf space. And the prices, although in UK pounds, seem a lot higher…like 79-99 pounds in some cases. The name rings a bell, but prices, and perhaps the sizes/scales, listed on that site do not quite seem to match what I recall having seen.
Apparently FlyingMule is an online source for a variety of lines. I’ve been looking through it this afternoon.
There’s a bewildering array of these things if one Googles. I’m looking for opinions, if we have anyone here who indulges.
I’m more interested in the WWII military period than others. If I do start buying some, I’d like to choose a line that has a variety – not one that has six nice planes, but then they’re out of models. Small is better. Quality and price are areas on which I can be a little flexible.
Any hobbyists who’d care to share impressions of various lines, or experiences with particular dealers/websites? Thanks,
Sailboat
