College Basketball 2009

Let me count the ways: (right off the top of my head)

[ol]
[li]Because they are the ACC regular season Champs? [/li]
[li]And probable ACC tourney Champs?[/li]
[li]Because the ACC won the NCAA Tournament Title last year?[/li]
[li]and 2 out of the last 5 years?[/li]
[li]Because the Big East already has a probable #1 seed?[/li][/ol]

I don’t see what 3, 4, and 5 have to do with anything.

The ACC vs. Big East? Are you joking? Other than Duke, only Maryland is in the top 25. And Maryland beat Duke. Georgetown destroyed Duke when they played earlier in the year.

Even if 3,4,5 are irrelevant, #1 and #2 is enough.

And a couple others

  1. Duke’s record is better than WVU
  2. Most rankings have the ACC no lower than the third rated conference. Sagarin has the ACC/Big East in a virtual tie.

OK. So I watched the whole Kentucky-Mississippi State game and I don’t know I feel about Kentucky. There seemed to be a lot of bone-headed plays down the stretch where they seemed panicked and inexperienced. The talent is there but their lack of experience definitely concerns me. I don’t think they’ll be a Final Four team.*

*Obviously, I’m free to change my opinion on this once the bracket is released.

So how do you feel about Syracuse? They lost in the first round of the Big East tourney and they are projected as the final 1 seed…although a case could be made for OSU or WVU as well…

Yeah, as a Pac 10 fan, I haven’t had much to write about all season. I tried to jump on the Texas bandwagon, but the wheels fell off of that one quickly. So, I’m following UTEP and hoping they get a bid.

Syracuse actually made it to the third round of the Big East Tournament. :dubious: Of course they had to have two byes to get there.

Well, I haven’t seen Syracuse play in a while but I was really impressed with their win over West Virginia at West Virginia. We don’t get much variety up here in Canada so I take what I can get.

Well, the committee is now wiping their chins after the fellating of Duke. Not only do they get an undeserved #1 seed, but they jump over the Regular Season Big East Champ Syracuse to get a first round matchup in Jacksonville.

I guess Duke’s home floor was reserved for another event that day or else they could have played there. I pick Louisville to upset them in the 2nd round to put to rest this Big East v. ACC argument.

Going into this week, Duke was ranked number 2 by Sagarin. They won a conference (Tied regular Season, and Tournament) an every bit as strong as the Big East according to Sagarin. Their #1 seed is well deserved.

Anyone who says that the ACC is as strong as the Big East is crazy. How can such a statement be justified? Again, only two teams in the top 25.

The Big East has 5 and all 5 have been in the top ten at some point in the season and knocked each other out. WVU played, and beat, Georgetown twice. They split the series with Pitt. They split the series with Villanova. They lost by one point to Syracuse.

There are some serious big guns in the Big East that simply aren’t there in the ACC. Duke is the only game in town there.

Duke was destroyed by Georgetown the only time they played. Sure Duke has a better record, because they only played one top25 team all year (and lost to that team).

You would have to admit that if it wasn’t Duke, but another ACC team like Miami that wins the regular season and conference championships, and has the same record as Duke has had, they aren’t even considered for a #1 seed. It is all about their name.

FTR…Conference “strength” is not defined by the top teams in the conference, it is defined by the entire conference.

Furthermore:
From Sagarin:

Lowest ranked ACC Team = Virginia @79
Lowest ranked Big East Teams = Providence (95) Rutgers (129) and DePaul (176)

I love the Kentucky Wildcats. Matter of fact, I was probably the happiest person in the state of Mississippi today. But, after that great game that Mississippi State pulled out, I’m totally pissed that State did not get an NCAA bid.

Woohoo! Gauchos gonna lose me 5 bucks, woooo! Living the dream.

No, they were beaten by Georgetown in what I suppose would be the SECOND round of the Big East tourney…and Louisville got beaten by a pathetic Cincinnati team…yeah, remind me again how awesome the Big East is when we see whom has teams in the Sweet Sixteen.

Duke will kick Louisville’s ass. L’ville is not a great team this year.

I love the UK Wildcats too! What a coinkidink! As for Miss State, damn…they played a great game for their very tournament lives…and we still won.

Lesson: if you want to make the Big Dance without having to win your auto-bid conference or subject yourself to being a bubble team…WIN MORE REGULAR SEASON FUCKING GAMES…

This whole talk by the likes of Boeheim and Pearl about endorsing an expansion of the tournament to 96 teams is utter lunacy…

Better check again.

Duke absolutely doesn’t deserve a number 1 at all, let alone the third. Syracuse and WVU suffered from a huge competitive conference in the Big East Everyone loves the ACC though it was really pretty bad this year, not Pac-10 bad but definitely not inthe Big 12/Big East range. Duke got absolutely crushed by Georgetown. Syracuse losing the last two games plus the question mark that is Onuaku is what dropped them to the fourth number 1. WVU or OSU shoul’ve gotten that last number 1 and prolly wouldn’t have barked too much if either of those had gotten the third number 1 over Syracuse.

The way they are playing the 2-3 this year is huge for them and creates all kinds of problems for everyone not named Louisvile (for whatever reason). The potential loss of Onuaku puts alot more pressure on Rick Jackson as that 1-2 in the middle was alot to deal with and Rick might have to carry the load himself. Wes Johnson is the star but Andy Rautins is the glue. Throw in Scoop (though Triche is the starter in name only) and Kris off the bench and if they can get their poop back in a group (stop the freaking turnovers and hit a frigging free-throw now and again), they will have a deep, deep run this year,.

The Big East is the BEAST. The mid tier teams in the Big East would challenge for titles in virtually every other conference. The weaker teams would prolly be mid tier in most others. Even Rutgers and DePaul are able to give any of the big boys a run for their money on a given night. Rutgers beat G’Town and DePaul lost to SU in a really close game. UConn went 5-11 in Big East play then went out and got beat by 20 in the first round of the BE tourney to St. John’s, but schooled Texas when they were number 1. Georgetown was an 8 seed in the BE tourney but beat SU and absolutely took Duke behind the woodshed in the regular season.

Yeah, it was after I posted this that I realized how bad of a season State has had. But they are a #1 seed in the NIT, so I can cheer for both to win.

I’m still the happiest person in Mississippi, apparently. Nobody wants to talk to me about the game.
