I said that calling the number was smart, given that it wastes the scammers’ time and money, and that only giving them money and/or financial information would be stupid.
A post that was just fine, explicitly NOT aimed at the OP, and explicitly answering a question the OP asked in a post. And then Derleth gets accused of trying to weasel around with backhanded jabs.
Anyone who thinks there was any kind of jab/insult/whatever needs to actually read what was posted.
I don’t understand this either. He specifically noted in his post that he was talking about people who paid, which did not include dougie. The only people he insulted are hypothetical victims of this scam.
Your posts on religion when you first joined all but demanded that they do so. It takes some people a while to move on from first impressions.
Nobody called you a son of a bitch. Chances are they won’t call you a name anywhere except in the Pit. In which case, you are allowed to respond in kind.
It would be easy for me to claim that I would not descend to others’ level, but I know that I too am subject to human failings.
I would, however, invite anyone who claims that I am an instigator to assess their own posts that immediately precede mine that they would criticize me for, and ask themselves if maybe I could really be faulted for forgetting my manners–especially as thin-skinned as they know I am.
No, I’m not going to “ask myself if maybe you could really be faulted”. Other people here manage to avoid threatening people in response all the time. If you’re too thin-skinned, you need to stay out of the Pit, or if you must respond, try doing it WITHOUT threatening someone. Really, it is possible! (Seriously, I’ve been insulted far, far worse. Suck it up, buttercup)
You’re responsible for your own behavior, and the “well, I’m only human!” shouldn’t cut it. Why should you get special treatment? If you can’t deal with it, maybe the internet isn’t for you.
As far as I’m concerned, of course you can be faulted for forgetting your manners, especially if you know you’re thin-skinned. You know you have this bad trait, you’re the one who should be taking extra care about it, making extra allowances. It’s not up to other people to walk on eggshells around you because of your faults, it’s up to you to be extra careful not to let your faults take control of you.
Nobody mentioned Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency, which is the only way I’ve ever heard of the ransomware scam working. It’s possible there are some people out there rock-stupid enough to make ransomware such that their collection of the ransom can be traced back to them, but from everything I’ve heard cryptocurrency is how ransomware is done. Therefore, ransomware isn’t on my mind when a popup mandates calling a phone number (which can also be traced back to someone, and means they have contacts in the country) and the call requests bank information.
This, I think, is a dodge. The currency of the fee wasn’t mentioned–and if I were handling ransomware, I wouldn’t mention the bitcoin part until the mark was well and truly hooked and committed to paying, because most marks will have no idea how to use Bitcoin, and you don’t want to scare them away before they’ve decided to pay. Dougie apparently hung up as soon as a fee was mentioned.
If you were concerned about the presence or absence of Bitcoin, you should have asked, or at least qualified your statement. As it was, you gave incomplete and potentially harmful advice.
