Y’all are making me nostalgic for the Lubavitchers, even if they are the Real Deal…they used to camp out on Washington Square when I was in college, in a big RV dubbed the “Mitzvah Tank,” especially right before Jewish holidays. They would stop any passers-by they suspected they were Jewish and ask them to come upon the truck and recite whatever prayer or brief ritual was appropriate for the upcoming holiday.
I swear, they figured me out every time, agnostic or no. Must be that Jewdar. Once I was walking with a Puerto Rican friend, speaking Spanish, and they still got me. Mr. Head Lubavitcher, in wide-brimmed black hat, black trench coat, the whole nine, asked: “Are you Jewish?” I respond, “What do you mean by that?” He laughs and says “Yep, you’re Jewish, all right, answering a question with a question!”
I was feeling impulsive, so I decided to check out the Mitzvah Tank. Lemme tell you, one way to make a bunch of teenage Orthodox boys really, really nervous is to look them in the eye and smile. It was kinda entertaining. The Lubavitchers don’t have the fashion sense of the other folks you mention, but I think it would be great fun to throw a few into your room, too.
Ah, you just made me remember a story of my sister’s. She used to work for the Academy of General Dentistry here in Chicago. A couple of years ago she worked a booth at a dental supply conference down at McCormick Place. Apparently 2 other conventions were going on at the same time: the Nation of Islam, and some international conference of poodle breeders. She said she had great fun standing in the walkway between the various sections of the conference center and watching worlds collide. (No NOI folks walking poodles, unfortunately.)
Are the “Real Hebrews” different from the “Black Hebrews”. I have visited the Black Hebrews in Dimona and while they are a little bizarre, they do seem like quality people who are pretty accepting. Yeah, they have their shtick, yeah they claim to be Jewish but the Jews won’t have them (although Israel will), but they seem pretty happy in Dimona, which is a pretty crap little town. Apart from the “secret” nuclear plant and so forth.
Similar but I believe the group to which I refer is different. Similar though.
However, I personally feel it’s the Temple Priest crossed with 70’s Pimp style that really makes them special. It could be a whole new thing in Judiasm.

As far as my excessive giggling, what’s so funny to me is life, the universe, and just every lil ol’ thing. Giggling and smiling is just something I do without thinking about it. I can’t help it. I think I’d be a lot more religious if my rabbi had a well-manicured pimpin’ hand. Or instead of a yarmulke, the cantor wore a foot wide fur fedora and a zoot suit.
