And the most pointless poll award goes to?
Fights you all off with a stick for it
As you can see, I’m a fan of the asterisk.

Second one looks better to me.

Hmm, seems I prefer an alternate format.

Mostly because of things like this…

I laughed.
Either is fine.

Ow.

You just wanted to show off your colon!
I normally use the leading-and-trailing colon series method, because that was in common use here when I began posting (this being my first board).
One thing that is rare around here but common elsewhere is the “/me” leadin – I’ve seen matt_mcl use it on occasion, but almost nobody else.
In some versions of BB and chatroom software, beginning a line with a “/me” tells the software to fill in the user’s name and present it in a different color as an “action” line.
Thus:
/me trips Iampunha as he runs naked through the thread
would be rendered by the software as
Polycarp trips Iampunha as he runs naked through the thread
Implies through actions that this doper uses asterisks
I use angly-brackets (what is their proper name)

Merely taking advantage of a temporarily-warm climate;)

Asterisks for me.
Angle brackets. Just like their siblings, the curly brackets, round brackets, and square brackets.
The name of characters often varies between countries; the # character is a notorious example.
How many volunteers are you taking?
/me was coming to this thread to mention this one as well.
/me uses /me on other boards but almost never uses it here!
/me wonders why she does this.
I have now officially used too many /me’s. I normally use asterisks here. I like the look of colons (the punctuation, of course! I’ve never actually seen anyone’s colon, nor do I care to), but it’s just not what I am in the habit of doing.
/me is startled to be mentioned here.
uses asterisks
