I’m moving to Denver in two weeks. I’ve decided to join the enemy and get a cell phone rather than pay an arm and a leg for a landline from qwest. (I can’t believe local land line service is so expensive there!). Do any Denver-area dopers have suggestions for which companies are good and which suck in regards to cell phone service? Coming from CA, I can only get opinions from cell phone users here, and I know service is different in different areas. Horror stories? Can anyone recommend one particular service over another? I’ll be using a lot of long distance and it will also serve as my home phone, though I’ll probably keep the phone off during the day unless I need it. Any advice is welcome. Thank you!
What, no Colorado dopers have cell phones? Was it something I said?
At&T has the best coverage, especially in the mountains and rural areas. If you are going to hang out in Denver, it probably doesn’t matter too much what you choose. Go cheap.
Cricket baby. I’m going to get it soon, and I know a lot of people who are happy w/ it.
If Qwest offers it, I have it. Land line, DSL, DSL service, cell, voice mail, etc…
I live in C Springs but their offering is pretty good.
I have used my cell through areas where it’s roaming and not had problems, in pretty remote areas. Have used it in Denver even though my home territory is in C Springs.
For the Vegas Dopefest 2000, I took my phone to Vegas with me, with surprisingly good results (except I had some issues while in the casino in the Imperial.) The rates for roaming wasn’t that bad really.
Anyhow, while many are afraid of Qwest, I have had good luck with them over the three years I have had cellular service through them. I do get free long distance in the 50 states, it’s a reasonable price with reasonable hours (you know that peak time versus weekend and evening time) and overall, good service from them.

DOH, didn’t mean for the double post.
Think we had AT&T when we were in Colorado. They were fine in Metro Denver, but really, really spotty elsewhere in the state. I’m not talking “rural areas”, either. There were spots right in the middle of decent size cities (like Boulder) that we couldn’t get good reception.
Spouse uses Verizon for his cell and is very happy with it; he uses it mostly for business with a fair bit of long distance.
There is a store called Phones Plus (various locations) which can give you the lowdown on the various services.
I live in one of those handful of areas in Colorado that it is virtually impossible to get local service with a cell phone, so…I can give you no assistance whatsoever.
I’ve got Verizon, it’s got a few dead areas up north though so I wouldn’t reccomend it. I heard that Sprint was a better carrier for Denver, but I don’t know from experience.
Thanks for your responses, everyone!
Caprese, I will look for Phones Plus once I get to Colorado (am doing the move as a roadtrip; I’ll get to Denver somewhere around the 10th).
