"Comanche Skypark" in Jimmy Buffett's "Volcano"

Wow, I didn’t know zombies could be resurrected twice!

And to top it all off, we finally have the answer to the question after 10 years!

seasterling, please thank your dad for supplying the long awaited information, and tell your grandparents that this is precisely what the Internet was created for.

As an aside, “Volcano” is my 12-year old son’s favorite Jimmy Buffet song, and Ione is only a 45 minute drive from our house…we’ll have to take a drive one day so I can show him what the song is referring to

I’m pretty sure the address is 3750 coal mine road. feel free to drive by but out of respect, please do not disturb my grandparents. they are super friendly and i’m sure they would talk your heads off for days but they also have very limited mobility and it would be a huge effort for them to even walk to the gate to talk to you. and dont even dare try to sneak around, my grandma carries a loaded six shooter on her walker.

seasterling, anyone who has previously posted in the thread (or just subscribed to it) will see a new addition if they check the “User CP” option. I posted in the first resurrection, not the original, but am fascinated by, and grateful for the information. Thanks!

Oh, I was thinking more of a drive by, point out the window and say “there it is!”…I wouldn’t want grandma to waste any ammunition on my account

Hey, this is cool - thanks for the info! I have “Volcano” on my iPod.

Ten years and 13 days… is that a record from time of initial question to final, definitive answer?

:smack:Okay - so heres the scoop on what happened at Commanche sky park. I was Jimmys tour manager for 17 years , and was at the show . We were flying in to Commanche sky park to do the show with Jimmy, and were in small planes provided by the promoters. I believe we were using 2 or 3 planes to get the whole band in. As we circled the runway to make our landing, there were stunt planes flying all around us, and off the runway was a plane that had crashed while landing at the strip. This made Jimmy and all of us very concerned. The plane landed, the show went off, and we all stayed overnight in our luxurious condominiums. (we all preferred hotels, so this was no big deal for us). I believe Jimmy also had a broken leg at the time. We left commanche sky park the next day, and all the excitement and disorganization of the show made a line in Jimmys Volcano song!

Did you stop by after the show for some braaaaaaains?

I think that is a relevant contribution lipbalm, thank you.

People get a little obsessive here about reviving old threads (hence zombie references). I personally think it is great that someone who was there found the thread and added to it, even if they dont have nearly 50000 posts.

Agreed, if nothing else it’s confirmation from a second source.

Yea, thanks lipbalm. Interesting to have more details.

I like this thread. Its been resurrected four times now, even outliving its OP, and each time with some real extra info added.

Ugh, come on. You’re better than that.

Later versions of the song change the locations at the end. I have the original and a very late version (maybe 2008?) back to back on one of my standard car CDs. He completely reverses some of the lyrics - “I’d rather land in New York City / 23rd Street is on my way” and “I’d rather land in Meh-hi-co.”

I don’t see it mentioned in the thread, but Buzzard Bay, near Cape Cod, was the site of his near-fatal seaplane crash.

Yeah, I think our knee-jerk reaction to zombie threads should be tempered when there is real information or experiences to be shared. So what that previous posters won’t likely see it? Who cares? I saw it, know the song, and now have some good background information to think about next time I hear it.

Thanks!!!

Moderator Note

I would personally appreciate it if, when a zombie thread is bumped, people don’t just make “braaaaains” or other zombie jokes. It’s a very old and obvious joke, adds nothing to the thread, and doesn’t really inform the new poster (or other newbies) that the thread is old.

Thanks

FWIW, this site suggests that there were 2 performances by Jimmy Buffett at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, CA: June 10 & 11, 1978.

Camanche Skypark (runway currently looking a bit past its prime in Google Earth) is located about 25 miles NW of the fairgrounds.

So give us that long overdue zombie thread flag…

I really hope that this thread will be re-re-re-resurrected (I’m predicting some time in mid-to-late August of 2019) by none other than Jimmy Buffet himself, so that he can provide the closure that I’m sure we all agree is sorely needed here.

Because so far, all we have to go by is an old concert program, a second-hand account from the grandson of the pilot of the airplane in question, and someone who was a passenger in the aforementioned plane.

We need some actual evidence, people! Not just these wild theories!!!

Well, I remember when Jimmy and band came to Lake Camanche to stay for that concert. They did indeed land in Camanche SkyPark owned by the Chuck Easterling. Concert was called Mountain Aire 1978. It was a great venue and part of the show consisted of stunt planes. I remember a few details as I worked at Lake Camanche at the time. He did have a broken leg that summer. They were flown by Chuck Easterling. The airport was small and he may have written it because they found it boring out there in the foothills. That part is pure speculation. I would have known if there was an incident with the plane etc. I will ask my dad, if he remembers any more details. I know he used my sailboat and ripped the sail and never offered to repair it. My dad put duct tape on it for a quick fix. They also burned every stick of redwood furniture of one of the tenants at the lake. They did pay that though. My dad did say it made a beautiful bonfire. They were pretty nice and obviously it was back in the day and they partied hard too.

Sorry. I did not see this post until just now. My apologies.
