"Comanche Skypark" in Jimmy Buffett's "Volcano"

Hi everyone, I’m back. BRAIINSSSS… Great to see that people were interested in hearing about the connection between my family’s property and Jimmy’s “Volcano” song. In the 6 years that have passed since I originally replied, both of my grandparents have since passed. They both lived well into their mid 90s and were able to celebrate a 75-year wedding anniversary the year that my grandfather died. The airport is now owned by my father (Charles Easterling Jr). Unfortunately this last friday, a large piece of our family history was lost as everything burned to the ground after something in the barn caught fire Friday afternoon. Luckily we had removed most of the sentimental items after my grandmother passed but it’s still heartbreaking to know that my dad’s childhood home is completely gone. the only structure left standing is the steel hangar that once housed our 1939 Taylorcraft and a few other old cars and camping trailers. does anyone know how I can post a picture? I have a really cool hand-drawn sign for Camanche Sky Park that I think you would all enjoy.

First, thanks for coming back; revivals like this are well worth it.
Second, you can’t post a picture directly to this site, but you can post it, anywhere else on the web (flikr, dropbox, or any other file sharing site) & post a link here.

The command to post it here is “url”. The way you’d do such (excluding the red underlines) is [url=www.google.com]Google[**/url_**]
Real Example: Google - Hint: Click on <Quote> to the right of my post to see the details in actual use.

Awaiting your picture(s)!

Ninja’d by Spiderman with a better, more informative post than I’d have written. All of it.

ETA: removed redundant comments about picture posting.

Thanks for returning. I’m sorry for your losses. An era is ending.

I was a young pilot in Southern California in the 1970s and spent many happy afternoons banging in and out of the many small strips along the coastal range down south. I’ve been in and out of Grass Valley but that’s about it for me and out of the way foothill airports up north.

Camanche Skypark sounds like a real treat in so many ways.

Did they serve Stewart Sandwiches at the airport?

Post #2, above, by Dr. Lao includes a link to airnav (05Q) that seems to be defunct. But here’s a live link I found: http://www.airnav.com/airport/CA19 — although the airport details seem a bit skeletal.

seasterling, welcome to the Dope, in case nobody mentioned back when. Do you plan to rebuild there? What kinds of facilities did your private little airport have? Hope you’ll become a regular poster here in our Straight Dope Message Board. Consider taking a look at our long-running aviation thread, The Great Ongoing General Aviation Thread

I have a pilot friend — we go flying every once in a while. Maybe we’ll fly over your place someday just to take a look. Are your folks still standing guard with granny’s shotgun?

I think this is one of the best threads I have read on this site.
