Combine CSR and CC?

Understand I’m not criticizing you personally, I just think it’s unfortunate that there are several folks on here who don’t find the columns or Staff Reports interesting or informative enough to spend a couple of minutes out of a week reading them.

If it makes you feel better, I’ve been reading the column (online) for about 9 years, browsing the forums for about 2 years, and only just recently started posting.

I voted for “merge” before the poll was closed. If I were in charge, I’d then also lock the newly merged forum so that only staff could create new threads because I agree that a link to a staff-prepared discussion thread is a good idea. There is already a “comment on this” link at the bottom of each article, but it goes to the forum, instead of a thread about the article. It would help advertise the articles too, since every time a new article is put up, the corresponding new thread would also pop up for people using “find new posts”.

This is where I think you are going too far. There are multiple threads about the same column in those forums, because there can be multiple issues about each column. What would happen is that the discussion would have to go somewhere else.

With the exception of a couple of outliers, almost all the threads are under 20 posts - many are under 10. I think there’s plenty of room for a couple of tangents in one thread about a relatively short article. Regardless, very rarely are there multiple threads and I would bet that often those multiple thread come from someone not seeing the first one.

I think there are a few good ideas in this thread to try to highlight the column more. Let’s see if we can do at least one of them.

I’m sorry if my initial posts upset people. I did say more than once I was not criticizing people or saying they were obligated to read anything. Apparently Dopers were so angry at me or threatened by what I posted in here that there’s an entire thread off-board where people are making fun of me with sexual and gender slurs.

I don’t think that’s really called for.

I read both Column and Staff report regularly. Both these are valuable to me,as I am inquisitive by nature.These columns have fought my ignorance,by answering many “why” questions. I have read lot of archives also. Being an engineer,I appreciate the research that goes into answering these questions,trivia or technical.

I am sure there are many readers who read SD and SR regularly.They are too lazy to post here in support.

Having said that,methinks both can be combined. SR+Ed’s wit=SD.

I can think of a compromise: We do what you say, but posters can request, and the mods can create, a second thread for a column if they think the original is getting too convoluted. That will cover those outliers you mention.

And Una: I 100% agree with you. The one thing I haven’t done is apologize for blasting you for defending Cecil way back when: I honestly don’t even remember it, but it obviously hurt you, if you still remembered it during my meltdown.

If it’s any consolation, I’m sure they do it about me, too. I know I’ve seen it for other Dopers, especially mods (if you are talking about the board I think you are). Your authority over the column makes you an easy target.

IOW, don’t let it bother you.
