Come on down, JillGat

In this thread, you’re blatantly trying to dig for dirt on a Presidential candidate. Try substituting McCain or Obama instead of Nader. That’s bad enough, but you’re also dissing someone for intending to vote for this candidate.

The last time I looked, America was a democracy. Maybe your friend genuinely feels that Nader would be the best President? It’s you’re friend’s choice, not yours. If you dislike it, try and reason him or her out of it.

If you want to look for dirt, try looking in a mirror.

Ralph Nader is a tool.

People get their panties bunched up about the strangest things.

That’s what you think. It’s your right to think that; other people have the right to think differently. The open exchange of ideas and viewpoints is one of the things that makes America great.

Absolutely. But that doesn’t change the fact that Nader is a tool.

Or that panties that are bunched tend to stay bunched.

[Ralph Nader]
Oooh, that’s hot!
[/Ralph Nader]

And another thing that makes America great is being able to tell people when they are acting like idiots. Friends don’t let friends vote for Nader.

If you were a true friend you’d respect their right to differ.

And so what if he doesn’t have a sex life? For some people it just doesn’t happen. Some people just aren’t bothered. You wouldn’t blink a his lack of sex life if he were Brother Ralph Nader, would you?

BTW I’ve never met Mr Nader; I’ve never even listened to him, and (being British) cannot vote in the election anyway. I have no dog in this fight. I’m just appalled by JillGat’s post. Republicans and Democrats routinely accuse each other of trying to dig up dirt: I never thought I’d see such a blatant attempt on the Dope.

Slotted, Phillips, or Torx?

You respect every stupid opinion that every one of your friends has ever had and never tried to change one? Who made you the arbiter of True Friend status anyway?

Right. My friend thinks those uppity niggers and queers should all be hanged. I disagree but I won’t argue with him or try to change his mind, since I respect his opinion.

I was thinking more along the lines of a large pipe wrench, as every time he opens his mouth, I begin to exhibit the symptoms of severe blunt-force trauma to the head.

There’s a difference between respecting someone’s right to do something, and respecting what they actually do with that right.

I can respect someone’s right to free speech while still calling a tool a tool when they say something idiotic.

You don’t have to respect their opinion; you do have to respect their right to hold that opinion.

I dare suppose you hold a minority opinion. Should we outlaw you for holding that opinion?

I was a bit annoyed by the thread in the OP, too.

I’ve said this before, but it’s foolish to blame Nader voters for a Republican victory. They are partly responsible, true, but only a small part.

Bush voters. Vastly more responsibility for electing Bush than anyone else (barring behind-the-scenes shenanigans, of course).
Non-voters. Why are Nader voters held hostage for not voting Democrat, and non-voters are off the hook?

Okay, now you can blame the Nader voters. But honestly: 75% of the population bears more responsibility than they do, so why the hatred? Is it because they deserted the team to follow an asexual consumer advocate? I don’t mind if you castigate them but please do so in proportion to their share of the blame.

Where was JillGat advocating the criminalization of Nader support?

What do we do with thems that ain’t so uppity? Hit em with a firehose?

Quartz, i get where you’re coming from, and i have considerable sympathy with your general position. The notion of digging up dirt on candidates that has nothing to do with their abilities to run the country sticks in my craw, too. I also appreciate your general position that we should respect people’s rights to hold different opinions, even when we disagree fervently with them.

But i’m still not really digging your pitting, at least the way you’ve gone about it

If JillGat thinks that the question of whether or not Nader has had an intimate relationship is relevant to his candidacy, then all that tells us, really, is that JilGat is a moron. And if she finds some news about Nader’s (lack of) relationship history, and her friend dumps Nader as a result, then all that tells us is that her friend is also a moron.

Really, the only thing that’s going to stop people trying to dig up irrelevant personal dirt on candidates is if the electorate makes clear that this sort of shit won’t work. As long as it works, people will do it, and that also is (for better or worse) part of living in an open society. In this instance, at least, we get the democracy we deserve.
