I remember Cecil had a column and there was some discussion ten years ago, and periodically thereafter, about what to call the decade from 2000-2009. I remember some people were touting the “oughts” or “aughties” or something, which, pardon my French, always struck me as pathetically limp-penised.
But I haven’t heard a word about the new decade. Have we just given up?
“Come on mom, it’s the . . . teens?” :dubious:
“New millenium”?
I’d probably go with “teens” though.
It’s “naughties” in English English, but it never caught on I don’t think. I suspect we’ll have to go with “this decade” and “the previous decade” until we get to “the twenties”.
I favor “the turn of the century” for the first decade, followed by “the teens”. However, that last won’t feel right until 2013 rolls around.
As for the decade that just passed, people talk about calling it “aughties” a lot, but in actual practice, I feel everyone called it “the 2000s” and will continue to do so for quite a while, ambiguity notwithstanding.
Sadly, this will be known as “the two-thousand and tens”. Good news is that in just ten years we’ll have the roaring twenties.
I call 'em the Naughties.
“Come on mom, this is the 21st century!” This should work until we get to the 20’s.
Since all of the candidate names sound asinine, I don’t call either decade anything.
Saying we’re in the 21st century sounds okay. The jury’s still out on whether “the third millennium” works.
2000-2009 was the Zeroes for me.
This decade, 2010 to 2019, is the Tens for me. That part of it after 2012 is the Teens.
Edit: the Third Millennium will do for anything up to 2999 or 3000, so it’s got a bit of mileage left in it.
The last decade was the “uh-ohs,” in more ways than one.
The correct answer is and has always been “The 2000s”. It’s all anyone ever calls it and while names like “The Zeroes”, “The Aughties”, “The Naughties” and “The Uh Ohs” were floated, I just can’t take any of those seriously. And since I never see them used in print or on television, I think no one else can either.
“Noughties” was used a bit, especially towards the end of 2009 when it was retrospective season on TV and in other media, but it seems to have waned since then. This may in part be due to my campaign of assassinating anybody who used the term, I’m not sure.
