Come Play Rock & Roll Jeopardy!

This game is being hosted by Shayna, Chocolate and Grace. It will run until someone has correctly answered all the questions or until Sunday, February 20th at 5:00 PM EST (based on the board’s clock), whichever comes first, at which time we will declare a winner and post the scores and answers. The prize for the winner will be a really cool cyber-trophy and all bragging rights associated with it!

<center>HOW TO PLAY ROCK & ROLL JEOPARDY</center>

Answer the questions and identify the midi that goes with it. It’s that simple (haha! :)).

Here’s how it works - Just like in real Jeopardy, there are 6 categories, each with 5 “answers” to which you must provide a “question.” But in our version of Rock & Roll Jeopardy, in addition to giving the correct “question,” you must also match it to one of the related midi files that are provided.

5 of the 6 categories have answers pertaining to an artist or group. Your response should include the artist or group that answers the question (or in this case, questions the answer), the midi number that matches it and the name of the song played in the midi.

The category “Soundtracks” has answers pertaining to a movie the soundtrack is from. Your response should include the answer to the question, the midi number of the song from that movie and the name of the song played in the midi. A bonus will be awarded for naming the movie as well.

(Hint: You may find it easier to identify the midis first and then try to match the artist or movie it’s from to the appropriate question.)

Scoring:

All complete answers are worth the point value of the question. Since each answer has 3 parts (either the artist/group or the movie related response, the midi number and the song title), if only 1 of the 3 elements is answered correctly it will be worth 1/3 of the point value, and if 2 of the 3 elements are answered correctly it will be awarded 2/3 of the point value. All fractions will be rounded to the nearest whole number. The bonus for providing the name of the movie for the “Soundtracks” category will be 25 points.

There is a DAILY DOUBLE that is worth twice the point value. Look for the bolded point value.

In case any of this sounds confusing, here are 2 examples (these are not actually in this game):

<center><table border=1><tr><td colspan=2 align=center>Food For Thought</td></tr><tr><td>100</td><td>He was a real cut-up in the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show.</td></tr></table></center>

Your answer would read:

Food For Thought, 100 - Who Is Meat Loaf?
Midi #770 (we are providing the midis to match) - You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night).

Your score for this complete answer would be 100 pts. An example of a partial answer score would be, if you answered only, “Who is Meat Loaf? Midi #770,” you’d receive 67 points.

<center><table border=1><tr><td colspan=2 align=center>Soundtracks</td></tr><tr><td>100</td><td>He got dumped at the altar and fell in love with a waitress.</td></tr></table></center>

The answer would be:

Soundtracks, 100 - Who Is Robby Hart? (Note that this is the name of the character, not the actor. The actor didn’t get dumped, the character did.)
Midi #852 - Pass the Dutchie (Note that you do not need the name of the artist.)
Bonus: The Wedding Singer

Your score for this answer would be 125 points (100 for the category value and 25 bonus points for correctly identifying the movie). If you only answered, “Who is Robby Hart? Midi #852. Bonus: The Wedding Singer,” you’re score would be 92 points (67 for the partial answer plus the 25 bonus points).

Now, the trick (you knew there’d be one, didn’t you?)… There are 5 questions in each category, but there are 7 midi files for each category. 2 of the 7 midis don’t pertain to any of the questions, but are still category related! For these extra midis, you can score bonus points by identifying the artist or group and the name of the song, making a note that these are extras (please also indicate what category they would fall under). For the 2 extra midis in the “Soundtrack” category you will only need to name the song and the movie title, NOT the artist who sang the song.

The “extras” for each category are worth 25 points per element (25 points for correctly identifying the midi number as an extra in that category, 25 points for naming the song and 25 points for naming the artist [or movie, in the “Soundtracks” category]).

If you have any questions, please post them here and we will check in from time to time to answer them as best we can.

In order to save bandwidth and loading time for the board, we have linked the game here.

Of course that should read, “your score…”

I did all this on an empty stomach save for some heavy-duty cold medicine, so if there are any more spellos or any of it is incoherent, try taking some drugs before you play. I figure if you’re in the same state of mind as me, it might make more sense.

And if people are having a hard time finishing up by or before the deadline, I’m open to extending it. I only made it end on Sunday evening so we’d have Monday (which is a holiday and we have off of work) to spend on scoring it. Let us know. I’ll be back in the morning to see if there are any questions.

These are pretty tough. Since I don’t have a sound card, my answers will probably just help someone else’s score.

Good morning John (and anyone else checking in here).

Sorry about the inclusion of the midis for those who don’t have sound cards. Here’s why it was done that way though. This game was actually created a while ago for another discussion board on which chocolate, Grace and I used to participate. There were 10 different related boards, and “inter-board challenge games” were frequently played there. Each board played as a team against the other boards so that there were many players contributing to one set of answers. In that case, people without sound cards could still play, but they’d take on the task of researching the answers to the questions while others would listen to the midis and then they’d match their answers up before posting.

Because so many people here were having fun playing the other challenge games, we decided to resurrect this one and modify the “rules” to fit MPSIMS, where people generally play as individuals against each other rather than teams. So since the midis were already part of the original game, we left them in.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t team up with as many other SD’ers as you’d like to submit your entries. Chocolate, Grace and I always play the other challenges here as a team, ourselves. If you have ICQ or AIM, that’s a great way to work with other people while playing. Just post a message here and ask if anyone else wants to team up with you. Surely there will be some takers.

As for the answers seeming difficult, I can tell you that every one of them was researched for verification somewhere on the internet. So even if you don’t know the answers off the top of your head, all of them can be found on line just by doing a little legwork in looking them up. And we do concede to the fact that the questions are made a bit simpler by having the benefit of hearing the midis and being able to narrow the possibilities down by knowing what artists or movies on which to search for info.

If anyone else has any other concerns, please post them here and we’ll be as accomodating as possible. We want this to be fun for everyone!

LMAO Arnold… And I thought all these songs were so easy! So far you’ve done quite well on the “Around the World” category but you’ve missed the midi’s. If you found the artist, then listen to the midi’s and see if you can find a song by that artist. It seems you found a midi by one of the artists, but didn’t post it with the artist.
Now I think the rules may have been a little confusing on the category BY “GEORGE,” I THINK YOU’VE GOT IT!. Since “George” is in quotations, the artist or group has the name “George” in it. It might help to try and identify the song and then go to a web site to find the artist. Maybe it will all fit together better for you.

Bwaahahahahaha… Marilyn Manson did a tribute to Dody and Di??? now that’s one I’d like to hear!

To those of you who are playing:

Jerry Lee did not come from New Orleans. He came from Ferriday, LA, and recorded for Sun Records in Memphis. Little Richard grew up in Macon, GA, and recorded for RCA and then Specialty records, he is usually considered to be from New Orleans, since he lived there for a while and (I think) recorded there for Specialty. Fats Domino is also a likely choice. He was totally from New Orleans. He lived, gigged, and recorded there. He was already on his way well before the 50’s, but could be just as “correct” an answer as Little Richard. The judges owe you some clarification.

Sweet Basil

Come to think of it, there are tons of other piano players that came from New Orleans, that are better known as R&B or Jazz artists that could be argued as well, such as Smiley Lewis, Professor Longhair, etc…

Sweetbasil, you are right about the fact that many artists got their start in New Orleans. However, the key here is that only one of the artists represented in the midis provided, matches that particular clue. That’s why the inclusion of the midi files was important in playing this game - they are the clarification. Make sense?

I’ll give everyone a clue to help out in researching though. Almost all of the information that was gathered regarding the artists came from the biography section at www.allmusic.com

Guess this game didn’t go over as well here as it did the last time we played it. Oh well, we tried. :frowning:

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

I thought the phrase meant they were all British artists. At any rate, according to books by Glen Matlock and John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), Paul Cook should qualify as an answer to the 400-point question (or as a question to the 400-point answer, if you’d rather).

However, if that’s considered wrong, does it mean that 400 points are deducted from my score, like on the real Jeopardy? And does it also mean that if I made any correct guesses, the answers are off limits to all other contestants? (Good luck to Arnold, regardless.)

I remember seeing this episode a long time ago, and am looking forward to the answer.

“A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back, he ever wants to see a cross?” – Bill Hicks

Well, it might be a correct answer IF the category was something like “Great Chefs of Music.” But remember, the replies must fit the category, just like in real Jeopardy.

Nope, we aren’t deducting points for wrong answers here.

And as for other people’s answers being off limits, I thought about asking people not to use other’s answers as their method of “research,” but it would be pretty impossible to know whether they did or not. I guess it’s really up to the individual to decide if they’d rather have the fun of actually playing the game or let someone else play and steal all their answers. At this point, that’s kindof moot though, since no one but you and Arnold have even taken a stab at this anyway.

I’m tempted just to give you guys the list of song titles and change the rules so that instead of identifying the midis you have to then only identify the artist who did each song and find the question (answer) that they fit. I will confer with my co-hosts this afternoon and let you know what we decide. To us, when we originally did this game, listening to those hokey midis and trying to “name that tune” was 3/4 of the fun of it. And they’re all very familiar songs and artists. There are none on the list that I would consider in any way obscure. But we didn’t take into account those who don’t have sound cards so they couldn’t do that even if they wanted to, which is our bad.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

“Alex, I’ll take ‘Rock Stars Who Have Choked To Death On Their Own Vomit’ for $300, please”.

I’ve always wanted to say that.

…send lawyers, guns, and money…

       Warren Zevon

Shayna: I know you said “these are all very familiar artists.” But, in my case, I never listen to top 40 radio or classic rock radio. So, to give you an example, even though Celine Dion’s Titanic song has probably inundated the airwaves, I never have heard it (except once in the movie.) So for me, recognizing those tunes is difficult, unless it happens to be a particular musician I am interested in.

Also I think the questions are fairly difficult for the casual music afficionado. For example, I have all the Beatles’ albums, and know quite a bit about their career. I know George Harrison (since the song My Sweet Lord is midi 14), is probably the answer to one of the George questions, I’m guessing the electrician one, but even I can’t tell for sure. Another George is probably George Thoroughgood, since “Bad to the Bone” is Midi 24, but even knowing that, I have no idea what answer fits him.

I think one way to make it easier would be, instead of having the midis, having an actual snippet of the song, but there might be copyright issues with that.

So I think your quiz is a great idea, but is too difficult, at least for me. (I don’t want to speak for anybody else.)

Oh, and John Rush:

Paul Cook might fit one of the questions, but dont’ forget you have to find a MIDI to match the artist.

Ok, the ruling is in. We have mutually agreed that we will provide you with the list of song titles in lieu of you having to listen to the midi files and identify them yourselves. The point value for each question will remain the same, but since we’ve removed the element of figuring out the songs, the scoring will now be full vs. half credit since there are only 2 elements to each question instead of 3. You must still match the titles with the correct artist and question, though. And remember, many of these songs were performed by more than one artist. The only acceptible one is the one that answers the appropriate question in each category.

We have also removed any “extras” that fit categories but didn’t answer any of the given questions - that’s why the numbering is off on the list below. We left the original numbers in case anyone wanted to listen to the midis and see if you recognized the songs once you knew the titles. Plus, since we already have the score sheet set up with these numbers, scoring will be easier for us if we don’t have to change them.

We hope that this makes it more fair to those who are unable to listen to the files because they have no sound card, and a little easier/less time consuming for everyone else.

Here are the song titles:

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” - Anne Frank

Arnold, I understand that not everyone listens to every style of music. I wouldn’t know one Country song from another if it bit me in the butt. But we did our best to come up with a cross-section of music, most of which people should be at least somewhat familiar with, and if not, be able to look up somewhere on the web.

Now that we’ve posted the titles to the songs, if you are not familiar with them, I’d recommend going to one of the sites where you can buy music online and doing a title search for that song to see what artists have performed it. I know you are bright enough to be able to do some deductive reasoning after you have that information.

As for your Beetles knowledge and being unable to apply it to any of our questions, again I will remind you that we found all of our information on the internet. Therefore it should be fairly easy to use a search engine to uncover the identity of the artist in question once you have the artist’s name. And we gave you a hint above as to where we found most of the information we used (but in all fairness, and not to mislead you, we did not get the answer about the electrician’s apprentice from that site. That one may require further digging on your part).

Since you never had any concern about having to research some of your answers for any of Bricker’s challenges, I’m not sure what’s so different about having to research song titles and artists as opposed to poets, nursery rhymes, math equations, sports trivia and so on. If music isn’t your thing and you’d prefer not to play, I totally understand. Perhaps some day we’ll come up with a game that more people will enjoy. This seemed like a music-loving board so we thought people here would have fun with it.

I thought about giving this answer, but I don’t know his history. Which alleged heavy metal band was he in? Mojo Nixon added him to the list of people who have no Elvis in them.

Leslie Gore on Batman? Yeah, it was a campy show, but…

I thought this may have been the teenager on Donna Reed who had a hit with Johnny Angel, but I couldn’t remember her name. And still can’t.

That would be Shelly Fabares, who IIRC is married to Mike Farrell of MAS*H fame.

“Man looks in the abyss, there’s nothing staring back at him. At that moment, man finds his character. And that is what keeps him out of the abyss.”

THAT’S her name! Thank you, Grace. Now I can sleep again.

BTW, she was also in Forever Fernwood.
