Comedian Todd Glass Comes Out As Gay On 'WTF With Marc Maron'

Sounds like another interesting WTF episode.

Oh, that guy! Huh. Good for him.

I’m a big fan of Todd Glass and I was truly surprised (and thrilled) by this as it hasn’t ever even been hinted at in his act or in interviews/podcast appearances. I listened to the WTF interview and it’s really moving to hear Glass talk about hiding his sexuality and how hard it is, even now, for him to say he’s gay out loud.

Bored

Clicking.

Duh.

Guys, I’m straight (but bored) but sometimes the obviousness slaps you like a wet mackerel. If it doesn’t I have no idea how you ever make a date.

It could all be a part of some diabolical ploy to get a Subaru.

(I love your name Bob Ducca)

Well, he does have a killer bit about the headaches of throwing dinner parties and guests’ bad manners.

I had no idea who the guy was, so I looked him up.

He looks like what would happen if Mel Gibson, John Goodman and Treat Williams all (ugh) made a baby.

This, f’r’rinstance.

Just how hard does it take a guy to bang you over the head with “I’m sure she’s lovely, but I’m busy that night?”

He did it because of all the high school kids who look up to Todd Glass.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too.

Who said that? I don’t recall that from the WTF episode.

What’s up, Hot Dog?

I did not listen to it but I did read the article as quoted above.

None of the kids care because they know him less than I do. And I follow stand up comedy at least to some extent.

No shit?

I just downloaded that podcast. Now I’m a little bummed over this spoiler. But, no worries, looking forward to listening to it now.

Todd Glass has a huge following among comedy nerds (which I am one of), and a lot of his fans definitely are of the younger demographic (which I am not). Even if he is able to help just one of those kids feel better about themselves and being proud of who they are, then who are you to shit on that sentiment just because he’s not at a Lady Gaga level of fame?

Huge following really? He is not even at the Fred Gaga level of fame (Lady’s deluded cousin). I am shitting on it because his grand announcement is met with a resounding who cares. If it makes him feel better about himself good for him. If it makes for a compelling podcast great. (FTR I like Marc Maron but don’t catch the podcast much) But he is deluding himself if he thinks a comic who can barely headline at the local Chuckle Hut is going to have any impact. And from what I have seen as a comic he is pretty pedestrian. Maybe he wants to reinvent himself professionally.

I’m a regular poster at a popular comedy message board (where Patton Oswalt, Louie CK, and Doug Benson all are members and post from time to time) and there are literally pages and pages of posts about this news. Glass has his own podcast (which carries a 5-star rating on iTunes) and he headlines at clubs like Zanie’s in Chicago all the time (which is a club I hate, but it’s certainly an indicator of success in the business). I don’t know what kind of comedians you like, or how you judge their levels of success, but I’m not claiming he’s Jeff Dunham, Dane Cook, or Russell Peters - just that he has a strong following among a certain group of comedy fans and he’s very well respected by other comics.

Regardless, unlike you, I actually took the time to listen to the interview and he doesn’t claim to be trying to change the world. He just was feeling shitty about being so ashamed of who he was and hiding his sexuality while seeing news stories about kids killing themselves over their own shame. He decided it was time to be honest about who he was for his own sake, not because some gay 15 year old comedy nerd will potentially have a better life because of it.

The only thing I recognize him from is Last Comic Standing. I am much more exposed to east coast comics. He is not even on my radar. And what I have seen of him hasn’t impressed me much.

I may get around to the podcast. I have many more wtfs I have to catch up on first. But you have to admit that’s how the article was written.

FTR, there are a lot not-even-remotely-famous gay people who have expressed an identical sentiment to the one you’re complaining about from Todd Glass. Glass is (likely) not saying that because he’s a jumped-up fame whore. He’s saying that because he has years of first hand experience of being a closeted homosexual, and has a very keen idea of how lonely and isolating such an experience can be. Visibility is a huge issue in gay rights. The more people are open and honest about their sexuality - not just celebrities, but from all walks of life - the easier it becomes for other people to come out of the closet, and the harder it becomes for anti-gay bigots to paint gays as some depraved “other.” “Silence equals Death,” was a slogan in the gay rights movement long before there were *any *openly gay celebrities. The fact that a gay celebrity is repeating it now does not necessarily reflect in any way on his status as a celebrity.

Glass is well respected in the comedy community, so rest assured other comedians will be telling their fans about it too and there will be a lot of discussion about it. Glass has been on Tosh.0 at least a couple times so I’m sure he has young fans, but it doesn’t really matter, he did it on WTF, so that audience is actually more important for this argument. Maybe it wasn’t front page news but it’s a person telling a large group of people that it’s ok to be gay. I don’t really see anything to complain about.

Just getting over a bad case of Dirt Belly. How’s Gloria?
