I would give the same warning to Richard Jeni’s Greatest Bits CD. I damn near wrecked the car the first time I listened to it.
If you don’t mind “old” or “dated” stuff, there’s good comedy that’s even older than mentioned above.
Try the Goon Show, Jack Benny, Burns and Allen (or George by himself), Bob Newhart, the Smothers Brothers, and more from that whole range.
Seconded. God, I miss Richard Jeni.
If you like John Pinette, get anything by Gabriel Iglesias you can find. He’s like Pinette, only less annoying and more talented (and I like Pinette a lot).
If you like blue, try Daniel Tosh. He’s basically a blue Jim Gaffigan.
Other than that, same suggestions as everyone else. Eddie Izzard, Lewis Black, Louis CK…
Get satellite radio. Sirius has 3 channels of 24/7 standup comedy and if you get tired of it they have a dozen or so raw news channels, a dedicated channel for every major sport, 100 channels of music, two 24/7 NPR channels, BBC, CBC, and my personal favorite, Howard Stern.
The Smothers Brothers definitely! Alas, most of the original albums aren’t available on CD, but the Sibling Revelry collection is a good sampler.
Second Mitch Hedberg, Patton Oswalt, Richard Jeni. And since you mentioned Bill Engvall, Jeff Foxworthy has much the same appeal.
What is the average age of the people in this road trip?
If it’s 21, give or take a few years, I suggest Dane Cook. Otherwise, stick with Carlin and Izzard and pretty much every other suggestion here.
Thank you so much for your generosity! I feel terrible, though, because I can’t figure out how to download. I’m not usually bad with technology, but this has me stumped. I’m listening, though, and can get tracks on iTunes - I’ll be purchasing from there today and tonight anyway.
Thank you!!!
I do an 18 hour road trip with friends once a year. We pretty much stock up on comedy CDs for the trip. Here’s my best guess at the order of favorites
John Pinette - Show me the Buffet, Making Lite of Myself
Mitch Hedberg - Mitch all together, Do you believe in Gosh
**Richard Jeni **- Greatest hits
Kathleen Madigan - In Other Words
Jim Gaffigan - Beyond the Pale
Ron White - Drunk in Public, You Can’t Fix Stupid, Behavioral Problems
Lewis Black - Carnegie
Ralphie May - Just Correct
Steven Wright - I Have a Pony, I Still Have a Pony
Dane Cook - Retaliation
Chris Rock - Cheese and Crackers
The problem isn’t you, I’m sure.
I just checked my user account and it does say that all songs are available for free download. But then I actually look at my profile page, and the music player has not been updated with any “Download” buttons of any kind.
MySpace is just lame. Maybe the update was the responsibility of one of the people who got fired last month.
Check again later in the day maybe to see if it’s updated.
If you buy on iTunes, send me a message through my user account here with your address and I’ll see to it that there’s a hard copy waiting for you when you get home from your trip. The cut I get from your iTunes purchase will more than cover the shipping. The graphic artist really did some great work, it’s worth having the actually CD to hold onto as opposed to just a digital copy anyway.
If you’re not bothered by political incorrectness, I highly recommend Sam Kinison’s Have you seen me lately. Literally one of the funniest CDs ever made!! His posthumous Live from Hell is pretty good too!
How has no one mentioned Robin Williams?
Also second Steve Martin, Steven Wright, Eddie Izzard, Eddie Murphy, David Sedaris (although David isn’t a standup, he reads his essays/stories, some of which are side-splitting).
Jeff Foxworthy, Chris Rock.
There’s some Python stuff on record, too.
My dad gave me his old Bob Newhart CDs and they had some very funny moments in them.
Had my contribution to the Thread not been dedicated to shameless self-promotion, I’d for sure have mentioned Newhart.
Bob Newhart was the Comedy Album Comedian.
His records would be first on the syllabus for any University level Comedy Album course. Absolutely hilarious and perfectly crafted to be listened to. Newhart was always great to watch perform, but this material really works so brilliantly when all the visuals are the ones you create in your own mind.
“King Kong” always has me howling out loud everytime I listen to it.
Motorgirl, I’ll also suggest you check out Mike Nichols and Elaine May.
Six months ago at the invitation of some friends we saw a comedian perform at a packed Verizon Theatre. I’d never heard of this guy before and haven’t heard of him since. He’s been described as a cross between Richard Pryor and Jeff Foxworthy, was very redneck and his material was at times racist and definately sexist. I can look past that to a degree though and while a couple of his jokes did make me cringe, for much of his performance I was laughing my butt off. Plus, he’s actually a very accomplished musician and plays a number of “blue” songs that showcase his talent.
Googling, I see he’s got several albums out, Morning Wood and Nut Sack although I’ve not listened to either. His name? Rodney Carrington. He speaks to the audience with heartfelt emotion at times, telling of his wife’s bout with cancer among other things, makes a connection and draws you in, then he’ll pick up his guitar and play Show Me Your Tits.
He’s not for everybody. I see some reviews that tear him apart and other where folks can’t get near enough. He’s crude but endearing and at times had me laughing like a loon.
lieu - Hanging with Rodney is an absolutely fantastic album. Hilarious. I think the quality of his material has dropped off a little bit since then. But I love that album.
You know, I think he’s one of those comedians that is better to watch than to hear. His hyper-kinetic style adds something to the jokes that doesn’t come across on CD. Also, he is very topical, and his stuff gets dated VERY quickly.
I’ve always found Alonzo Bodden very funny.
J.
Anyone who listens to Bob & Tom knows Rodney Carrington! He’s hysterical.
Well, if we are looking for “really funny Bob & Tom guests”, I nominate “Uncle” Larry Reeb. But I think his CD(s) are only available at his shows. Too bad - he’s as funny as any comedian out there.
Yeah, I get that he’s better if you can see him. Still, a couple of his early albums are still hilarious.
