I can still do who routines from Carlin’s Take-offs and Put-ons - Gold Jerry! Comedy Gold! His **Seven Words ** album is essential listening…
The obvious gold standard of recorded comedy are Richard Pryor’s Live in Concert and, arguably, Chris Rock’s Bring the Pain - but both are DVD and benefit from the visuals - well Pryor’s certainly does; all Rock does is pace around a lot…
Oh - and **Steve Martin’s A Wild and Crazy Guy ** is pretty damn hilarious if you dig silly, surreal humor.
I saw Mitch Hedberg open for Lewis Black and Dave Attel and he got tons of laughs…so although Mitch’s comedy was unique, I’d venture to say that you’d like Black and Attel as well (probably Attel more than Black).
I’ve never seen an entire Chris Rock routine but I hear his shows are fantastic. The parts I’ve seen are great. Dennis Leary, too.
I agree with the Chris Rock Comedy Acts as being quite good- I have Bigger and Blacker- which is great, but its also inter cut with skits in it. But its one of his best performances.
I like Richard Pryor’s stuff, but its SO different from what today’s comedy is. It’s much more storytelling, and slower paced, with fun impressions and such, but not rapid fire jokes. So be warned about that.
Mitch Hedberg is still my fav. dude though, both of his CDs get heavy rotation for me.
I also liked the Evil Dead: The Musical, as a weird comedy/Musical CD. I crack up every time I listen to it, but only because I can picture the movie in my head so well, and it’s just poking fun at itself.
The last comedian I have is Russel Peters- which I like, but his humor tends to be catered towards his own culture and background more so than for the majority. But if you have any Indian/Brown friends, they would love to hear his CD if they haven’t already.
Some of my favorites are Steve Martin’s Let’s Get Small, Hedberg’s Strategic Grill Positions, David Cross’s You Stupid Fucking Baby and the works of Bill Hicks.
Eddie Izzard! I used to have Dress to Kill and Glorious on my iPod, and people always looked at me funny on the subway because I couldn’t help laughing out loud at some bits.
The only comedy CD I’ve ever bought is the 5th Annual End of the World Tour by Christopher Titus. I’m aware he isn’t the most popular comedian out there, but Titus was one of my favorite shows (screw you Fox) and I find his stand-up to be hilarious.
For some reason though, I’m more geared to watch stand-up than listen to it because I feel like I could be missing some great visual jokes by just listening. Eddie Izzard is a big one for the watching. Robin Williams too.
I’m also a fan of John Heffron and Alonzo Boden (Bodden?) but that’s because I’m one of those losers that watched that season of Last Comic Standing.
I have to third Bill Cosby. Get “Bill Cosby is a Very Funny Fellow - Riiight.” It contains his “Noah” routine. “To Russell, My Brother, Who I Slept With” is also hilarious.
Bill’s dad: Who broke the bed?
Bill: Well dad, this man came in the window…
Bill’s dad: There is no window in this room.
Bill: Well, dad, he brought it with him.
The above recommendations are all great. I just looked though my iPod and I can offer:
Daniel Tosh
Dave Chappelle
David Spade’s HBO Special
Jim Breuer
Jim Gaffigan’s Beyond the Pale
Kathleen Madigan
Maria Bamford
Nick Swardson
Rowan Akiinson
Sam Kinison
Stealing Comedy Central Present’s episodes off of LimeWire was what made solo travelling throughout Asia possible for me.
