Comedy Central - who does the censoring?

I just turned off King Ralph because it was being butchered by a censor. But then I remembered that The Daily Show came on right before and that had much more raunchy humor in it. Example: King Ralph says to King Mulamboa of Zambini

Except that “laid” was replaced with “broads” There were quite a few other examples where the words were so benign that I wouldn’t even have considered masking them over.

So is Comedy Central responsible for this? If so, why does TDS get a pass? And if it is the network, could I buy Mad TV on DVD and get all the profanity and nudity unmasked?

WAG- the producers of King Ralph made two versions available, one uncensored to show in theaters and VHS and such, and one that would be palatable to a general TV audience (of the time, hence the bleeping of now-tame lines).

I doubt anyone would find it practical to go through King Ralph and re-decide what’s offensive and re-censor the movie.

I dont know the movie, but I think that two seperate sources did the censoring. Also. I would assume that the time that has passed between the two programs… has allowed more freedom.

And not because it is a horrifically bad movie?

I think The Daily Show is unbleeped during the 11pm airing, but is bleeped when rebroadcast during the following day. It’s a matter of the time of day as I understand it.

Heavens no; I got quite a few good belly-laughs out of it. Amazon has an average customer review of 4.5 out of 5 stars. You could certainly find much worse.

Just remebered another - When the dessert is delivered and Ralph offers some to his guest, the name of the dessert is cut. You guessed it: spotted dick. Hearing the words “spotted dick” was not the joke - it was John Goodman trying to handle the situation gracefully. But all of that was cut out.

I was watching TDS rebroadcast: King Ralph came on at 4pm, so TDS and Colbert came on at 3 and 3:30.

But now that I think of it, it’s most likely that the movie was censored 15 years ago and that’s the version that gets aired today.

Unbleeped? Not in my market, it’s not. It’s pretty clear what the person has said, but the sound track is bleeped in the 11:00pm showing. This is on Insight cable in Anderson, IN.

Nope, Dewey Finn has it right. In the morning and evening showings, the censors block a few things. But, since I am don’t get home till late, I watch the Daily Show at 12 oclock Central Time (1’Oclock Eastern) and I have clearly heard Shit and Fuck. But I woke up early and saw the same broadcast in the morning and those words were bleeped.

Comedy Central does determine the amount of censoring it uses on the time of day. My best example, the Saturday Secret Stash.

Same here, with Comcast in San Francisco.

The only time I remember seeing “The Daily Show” unbleeped at 11:00 was when the guest was the author of a scholarly book about the word “Bullshit”. Both the author and Stewart used the word several times, uncensored.

And if you thought “King Ralph” was hard to watch, definitely avoid Comedy Central’s showings of “Blazing Saddles”. I think they use the same version that was originally censored for network TV in the late 70s. The pertinent noises in the campfire scenes are silenced. Really pointless.

And don’t forget that Sheriff Bart is one crazy Nig…Nice, educated, well groomed black gentleman.
